Friday night, wife and I went to dinner at Mother Cluckers (foster and Elston). Coming home around 6:45 I hopped on the Edens SB to head back to Addison and Elston. As I stated already it's 6:45 pm on Friday night. Still rush hour in both directions. Express lanes from the Kennedy are NB leaving the city. Both NB express and regular lanes are packed as are the SB lanes.



So I'm in the middle lane and as we get closer to the merge with the Kennedy I start to notice traffic especially backed up in the left lane. As we move along even further I see a 4th lane of cars starting to emerge to the far left. When we get to the entrance to the express lanes (which are closed because expresslanes are open the other way) I see that the line of cars in the 4th lane are in the express lane entrance ramp and at the front of the line there is a car which is just sitting there in front of the closed gate. At this point there was a line of about 15 cars waiting behind the first car.


Took a closer look, the cars don't appear to be related in anyway, no funeral markings or anything. There wasn't an accident, was able to look and didn't see any cars with damage plus with the line of 15 cars is too many for a rush hour rear ender or really any other accident you could imagine other than something very catastrophic.

Got home and checked the online just to be sure that the express lanes weren't opening early and found out that they are on regular schedule which means they don't change over until sometime between 11-1 at night.



This has been buggin me all weekend, cant for the life of me think of an explanation for what I saw.

Any ideas?

My guess lead driver pulled over to rub one out. Everyone else parked behind him thinking masturbating guy knew something no one else did. As in the express lanes were flipping over imminently.

but still not a very good explanation. The cars in the back might just think they are in a normal left hand lane and not the express lane entrace, but towards the front they would've all seen the big signs saying the lanes were closed.

maybe traffic is so bad the one idiot in the front was able to successfully shut down the left lane... and the 15 cars behind him are just unable to pass ont he right due to the congestion? they have those big gates that swing out so it's not like someone could wait on the ramp.

I'm still trying to figure out why you didn't just head back south on Elston.
