One of the more controversial issues in CPS reared its ugly head again this week.

But think of the politically connected contractors and textbook publishers with their payoffs.

Or the maintenance and food suppliers and their comfortable families.

You would think after all these years given everything that has been tried this still is something that is a problem. Bureaucracy and corruption is especially sad when the end result is kids lose out.

This is everywhere but I'm sure you are not surprised. Even in our commonwealth, I think of the difference in cost per student in my SD (~5K a year) and compare that to Philly SD (~17K a year) and wonder where all that money is going because it's not going to give the student a higher quality education but it is going somewhere...

"North", "West" and "South" sides are code words in the CPS context. I don't exactly know why. There are plenty of economically and racially diverse communities both north and south so saying capital is not being divided evenly geographically tells me nothing.

Moreover wasn't busing all those years ago supposed to help get away from where the schools were and to desegregate?

The schools aren't segregated along strict racial lines anymore but rather between the wealthy and/or connected and everybody else (which just happens to look a lot like racial lines in most cases). The rich got selective enrollment and charter schools. The poor got thrown a bone with Local School Councils.

True. In many pockets on the southwest side, capital seems to endlessly flow. And plenty of schools in Hyde Park/Kenwood seem to be making out fairly well. But there's even a glaring example of wasteful "capital investment" at my own old school that's getting a brand new athletic field with field turf and a larger track to replace the old crappy ones. Stupid.
