Whatcha need? Earnings season has been fun. Whirlpool crapped the bed. Looks like Facebook disappointed. Some have been pretty solid.

I proposed one a year or so back that I would moderate. Unfortunately, the monthly fee I offered was way to low to be accepted. I am still ashamed because I think I offended certain folks.

Bought 10 shares of AMZN in 2017 for about $940/share. Excited to see what they release tomorrow. Prob some small sell off to start Q3 but I’m betting on north of $2,100/share by 2019

They’re something. Overvalued but then they are set to dominate many markets. I wouldn’t directly hold shares, but I understand why folks would ride the momentum.

What’s the downside of allocating 3-5% of a portfolio to it if you can comfortably ride the waves for 5-7 years?

If you’re putting only 5% in it, then that’s a solid move. Riding waves is actually one of the few statistically significant ways to earn excess returns. I remain a value investor.

Wealth is built over time by spending less than you make. You minimize taxes and transaction costs. You stay diversified. I don’t like the ETF mechanism, so I stick to index mutual funds. However, I have always had a trading portfolio for some educated gambling.

Buy Facebook tomorrow after it gaps down 20% at the open.

Always hard to know if you going to catch a falling knife. It was actually a good quarter earnings wise. I think the guidance with slower revenue growth has spooked the markets. Plus you have a pretty high valuation already. That being said, it might be a decent play. It probably recovers in a few weeks.

And this has been a lesson in hedging by denisdman.

I was laughing because they had the Citrix CEO on this morning. I tried catching that falling knife in just such a situation. I "saved" myself by tripling up on the second leg down and caught the small recovery. I couldn't bail fast enough. There is nothing I hate more than diving in after a blow up like this and then it gap down even more.

With FB, I think Jaw Breaker is right.....that's where I would put my money. No hedge!

A book I recommend to read for those that are looking to be long term stock investors is "The Single Best Investment: Creating Wealth with Dividend Growth by Lowel Miller". It will teach you guys about the concept of compound interest and dividend growth stocks and why they are the best investment for the long term.

I am personally an income investor utlizing dividend growth equities( stocks), Closed End Funds, and ETF's to generate currect and long term growing cash flow. The goal is replace my current working income from my job with investment income without actually selling out of any position by collecting the dividends (distributions) monthly. Some things to be aware of if you have a taxable brokerage account is the differenty types of transactions and there tax implications (long and short term capital gains, Qualified and non qualified distributions, Return on Capital, etc...) -- Things you dont have to worry about in a IRA (Traditional or ROTH).

A couple sites that I visit often for Investment research and news are:
Morningstar.com - https://www.morningstar.com
Morningstar forums - http://socialize.morningstar.com/NewSoc ... fault.aspx
Finviz - https://finviz.com/
SeekAlpha - https://seekingalpha.com/
Twitter Business Stream - https://twitter.com/i/streams/stream/793151206692687880

I'd love a Stocks section.

I am so pissed at myself for not jumping on Amazon last year when it was still under $1000.

Another website I like is TipRanks.

This would be a good time to get FB stock because it will get back.

I like to check out the FDA calendar here to see what biotech stocks are waiting on approvals. If a medication is fully approved, you can get a nice bump.

I fully missed the boat on Evolus ($EOLS) a few months back. It was around $8/share in April, then spiked up to $38 in early June.

I looked and do not see this fund anywhere with Vanguard.

I am looking to move some money into a some kind of Vanguard Index fund (not EFT). Is there a specific one you'd recommend? Not doing the IRA thing as I'd need to be able to access before retirement without penalty.

Vanguard has all sorts of funds. The most popular is the S&P 500 index.

I would caution you on a few fronts. You may want to choose a fund that is stocks and bonds. I would be hesitant to dump all your money at one time into a large cap index fund. If you want to enter equities, then you should dollar cost average in. You do that by buying a set amount in regular intervals. If you have $10,000 to invest, then buy $2,000 worth at a time every three months. Or something like that.

I am glad you brought that up. For several years, we were playing options based on that calendar. We would do deep research on single drug companies that were entering a decision on approval. We would buy out of the money options usually in a direction (put or call) that we felt was likely. We had some really good hits and a few very near misses. But it was a lot of work, and we found the FDA approvals to be puzzling. Some got through that we felt should definitely fail, and others failed when approval seemed near certain.

It was a lot of fun. We actually had a "committee" of about five of us that would debate how to best play each company.

I like the idea of going in through intervals. Thinking I'd hit these 3.
Vanguard 500 Index Fund Adm (VFIAX)
Vanguard STAR Fund (VGSTX)
Vanguard Short-Term Tax-Exempt Inv (VWSTX)

man....all of their bond funds are sucking up the joint over the last year. but...something to be said on buying low.
