I told you guys about our Shabbos elevator which originally pissed me off. Our board is loaded with Orthodox Jews, many of whom live on the same floor (not mine, I live in Little Moscow).

Anyway, I don't really see our board as very neighborly. They've instituted a shitload of draconian policies. For example, I got an orange sticker slapped on my car in my own space because the parking sticker they gave me was illegible. That really pissed me off.

For a few years I waged a stealth campaign against this administration via elevator talk. I don't go to the meetings. If you're too outspoken there you'll end up on the board yourself. I sure don't want that.

But a funny thing happened. A lot of the rules actually worked. For the first time in 25 years all assessments are paid up to date. There were at least three renters on my floor who have all been kicked out. And an apartment in my building just sold for the highest price since 2001.

The president got my vote in the last election. Now I think she likes me.

My wife is in her 3rd and final term as treasurer of our HOA board. She pretty much does all the bullshit for it, and I listen to her bitch about how useless the rest of them are. She decided to not run for a 4th term. She asked me if I wanted to run instead, and was met with an emphatic, “hell no”. I don’t do meetings as a whole, but I’ll go to the annual one because all the crazies show up and I do love a good shitshow. Most of my neighbors are completely nuts.

I’m treasurer of my HOA. We started our siding replacement project last month. Fucking headache. It’s great having people constantly ask me for the status, when I’m just trying to walk my dogs or play with my kid. ATTEND A GOD DAMN MEETING INSTEAD.

I lived in a subdivision where they decided to spend half the money on replanting trees. This was a very new neighborhood. Nobody showed up at the meeting (as usual) so they did it. Half the neighborhood showed up at the next one when snow removal went overbudget and the fees were jacked up because of all the tree purchases. You have no idea how crazy your neighbors actually are until you see them at the HOA meeting. Never went back to another meeting. Moved out a year later.
