Early in my bike ride this morning I experienced some type of derailleur malfunction and my gearing was stuck in the highest (smallest) gear in the rear. I was annoyed because it makes getting going from a stop very difficult, especially in the snow. When I was almost finished I was stopped at a red light heading west on Lunt at Western. There was an SUV in front of me heading west as well as I approached the intersection. He didn't have a turn signal on but the vehicle was canted slightly on an angle facing right as if he may make the turn. So I came up inside him and far enough in front so he could see me if he was going to turn right. I saw the light for cross traffic turn yellow and I waited as all the assholes sped up to make it through the light. When I had the green, both the SUV and I moved forward and it became clear that the SUV was turning left to head south on Western. I was almost to the yellow line in the middle of the intersection when I saw a gray van going about 40 mph heading south. I could see he wasn't going to stop. He slammed right into the SUV. I was only twenty feet away. Car parts and plastic were flying past my head. If not for the fucked up gearing I would have been right in the middle of that. I'm still a little shaken up. I've never come closer to dying in my life. |

Glad you are ok. We need you on that wall! I suggest you find another way to get exercise or around the city. Bikes and cars don't mix well. Or move to Amsterdam where the bike riders outnumber all other forms of traffic. |

My closest experience to death was also on a bike. I was racing my brother out in door county and was gaining on him when my front tire struck his rear tire. I launched into traffic and opened my eyes to see a tire about a foot from my face. The next thing I hear is the door on the car open and my dad’s voice screaming “what were you thinking?” Or something to that effect. |

I'm glad you're OK, but between the weather (cold and snow/slush/sloppy conditions) and the cars and trucks I don't know why you insist on riding your bike in these conditions. It seems like you're just tempting fate. |

I would bet that those southbound traffic signal lights were packed with snow. |

I've seen two people die on the street. One was on a bike and ran over by a supply truck. The other was on a motorcycle. I've seen some other terrible bike accidents with terrible, but not fatal injuries as well. Motorcycles have the well deserved reputation of being unsafe. Bikes are just slower deathtraps. |

Glad you are ok JORR. Chalk it up to to luck. Death though? More likely to actually survive a hit like that and be fucked up. Yes, if you get ran over is game over. What would really happen to kill you? Wearing a helmet would save your life. Keeping you brains from being splattered on the street. Or getting knocked out and dying from a simple bleed out from not being to take action against an open would. Organ damage, but the fatal kind? I would consider it another near miss in a laundry list of personal disasters narrowly averted. Stay alert and stay alive. |

Closest I have come to dying you ask? Scariest feeling I was close was choking. Closest was probably being hit by a car on my bike. Yes, wear that helmet people. Absolutely saved my life. |
