Inspired by the discussion on millennial consumption trends.

Do you let commercials and other advertising methods sway your purchasing decisions?

I'd like to think that's a no for me but I wouldn't be surprised if I have some vulnerabilities there. I don't give a shit about commercials or billboards. I understand however that the frequent display of whatever brand on billboards and commercials may slip into my conscience and play a role in how I perceive certain products and services without me realizing that influence.

To mitigate that I try to research whatever I may be purchasing (avoiding paid testimonials of course) and collect independent data. The price of the product/service dictates how much effort I'll put into the research. While doing this I will avoid the product/service's own claims about itself beyond the basic specifications. Again depending on what I'm purchasing I may lay the research out in a quick Excel file to quantify everything and see things from a different visual perspective. Then I'll make a decision.

I'd like to think this habit means I'm not a blind follower of the advertising industry but I don't know. I hope not. What about everyone else.

Nope. I'm absolutely immune. I only buy exactly what I need and only the best products for the job. I am living my best life.

I know we've done this thread a couple times in the past.

Like vegan I like to think it doesn't but I'm sure it has to some degree.

Dictate? No.
Does it have some influence? Yes.
Oddly, there are some brands and services I will never use because of their advertising.

The disclaimers in the ads for just about any prescription drug terrify the crap out of me.

Don't take this medication if you have 10 fingers. If you awaken in an abnormally large pool of vomit and blood, you should notify your physician...

Who are the best comedians? Geico, Progressive, or Allstate.

I don't get State Farm Aaron Rodgers commercials. Supposedly, It's a battle of Aaron's agents. However, one is an agent FOR the insurance company, not Aaron. I have some advice for Aaron. When push comes to shove, "your agent" is going to throw you under the bus.

Knowing a brand / product exists is helpful. But when it comes to making a purchase, I'm researching or getting opinions from friends that have already tried it.

Advertising is great at letting me know a product exists but for anything moderately expensive I rely on reviews and for anything cheap I'll buy it once and see what happens. There is too much information that is really easy to get to rely on a tv commercial.

I have to agree with those that said the ads are letting me know about things more than anything.

I wasn't mocking Rick specifically. I was mocking anyone who actually believes he isn't influenced by advertising.

Regular commercials influence them less now that my kids are adults. What I really wonder is just how much product placement does shape my choices?

Yeah, it worked on me with that Maple Bacon Chicken sandwich they have out now. It looked so good on the commercial. It was the most disgusting thing I've ever tasted. I literally threw it out after one bite. I'd rather be force fed Cici's Pizza or skinwiches from Arby's.

My experience of consistent disappointments from Wendy's pretty much leave me immune to their ads. Zack and IMU'S old threads about Baconators were the last thing that led me there.

Is that advertising or an appeal to parsimony?

That maple bacon chicken picture in the drive thru worked on me. It was kinda weird, it probably should have been served on a waffle. The thing had syrup on it. My will was not so strong as JORR...I ate it all.
