To someone who is not familiar with the area, in a few words, enough so they can visualize it? Me: "Basically, if you took Oakton all the way to the lake." |

If someone isn't familiar with the area, how would they know where Oakton St was? |

Apologies to jbills and ds and whoever else, it is kind of a localized question. Frank, I am assuming some rudimentary knowledge of Chicago area roads, etc. If you told me you lived about 5 miles west of Harlem, and 22nd street/Cermak/whatever, I could kind of visualize that in my head. Or if you said "you know where 94 and County Line is? I'm like 3 miles west of there." |

College was an interesting experience for this. If you lived in the suburbs, you said you were from Chicago. People who had a Chicago address got mad and said you weren't actually from Chicago. People from everywhere else besides "the region" thought you lived in a gang infested war zone. If you lived in "the region" you said you were from the suburbs. People from Chicago and the actual suburbs got mad and said you weren't actually from Chicago. People from everywhere else were surprised that Valparaiso was considered a suburb of Chicago. So, you eventually got shamed into naming your suburb when people asked, and then you had to triangulate it with three suburbs people have heard of, and the only three suburbs people had heard of were Schaumburg, Naperville, and Oak Brook(because of the mall) so you would say "It's near Schaumburg, Naperville, and Oak Brook" even though no suburb is close to all three of those. |

Northside of the city, just outside the edge of the nice part. But not a bad part, just not very developed yet. |

I am south of the East West tollway, but east of the North South tollway. I am also soutwest of the Tri-State tollway, which resides entirely in Illinois. |

I usually say Lincolnwood even though I'm actually in the City. Someone asked me last night, actually. I said, "West Rogers Park. Or West Ridge if you're trying to make it seem more upscale." |

When I lived with my folks twenty odd years ago I referred to it as far west suburbs although it was kind of a transition area st time as our neighbors had dairy cows when folks moved in in the late 70’s. Probably considered west suburbs now. Now I say faaaaaaaar west suburbs. Or more accurately narrow it down for people with out west north of I-80 between Quad cities and Lasalle/Peru (Or starved rock for “downstate” challenged. |

The Historical Reference: Over by that now defunct Rainbo Roller Center. You know, where they found all the kids bones after they tore it out to build 'rent a condos'. The Reality: Not close enough to a solid dive bar. |

When explaining to people not familiar with the area it is usually halfway between Milwaukee and Chicago. Otherwise Kenosha usually suffices for most others. Even if you haven't been here, there is a great chance you have driven by it a few times. |
