Home Depot has always been the best of a bad lot. The place to go for small jobs like kitchen and bath remodels. The Target to Menards' Walmart. Menards is the place you go when there's not a Home Depot close by. Plus they're good for the cheap bags of candy near the checkout. Lowes is for actual home owners who don't really have a clue. I only go to Lowes as a last resort. The new Menards in Libertyville has kinda changed my opinion slightly. It's 2-story and huge. They were perfect this winter for the cheap Chinese gloves/hats/blanket stuff. They have a huge pet food area with high quality food like Blue Buffalo. Their cleaning supplies are plentiful and cheap. They even have a piano with a string of bad piano players throughout the day...it's kind of bizarre yet touching. The coolest thing is probably the long, flat people conveyor to the second floor that magically grips your cart in place. |

For lumber, Menards is the place to go. Home Depot has shit lumber. For everything else I like home Depot, much faster getting in and out. |

Menard's Lowe's HD Menards is the easiest to navigate and find what you need, but may not have the depth of the others. Lowe's is not far behind, and seems to have the higher quality stuff. Home Depot is a giant PITA to find a lot of stuff, and is inconsistent from store-to-store, including their layout, which in some cases defies logic. They can die in a fire. |

Shocked there is no love for the Crafty Beaver. If you're looking for surly, inept service the CB is your kinda place. |

Menards seems to train their people up the best and I like that 95% of the time when you ask where something is they actually take you right there instead of pointing or telling you a general aisle like a lot of other places. People there are pretty knowledgeable. I get most of my lawn and garden stuff from Lowes for no other reason than it is less than 2 miles from my house. The people there are generally the least knowledgeable, at least at my location. If there is a specialty job or I need real professional help there is a True Value Hardware store right down the street from where I work. Those guys have forgotten more than I will ever know about projects around my house. |

I do enjoy a trip to Farm & Fleet or Fleet Farm, depending on where you're at. For lumber, you're best off going to an actual lumber yard like Hine's. |

Our local menardsis a cess pool with terrible lumber and cheap ass power tools. I’ll Go to Loews if I need something that Farm and Fleet doesn’t offer. But yes, the local lumber place is better than the box stores for actual building supplies. I honestly loathe Menards. The canned music = instant headache. |

The results are in, America loves Ace Hardware. Menards second, followed by Lowe's and HD. Market Force Information did a survey with 4,040 consumers to understand the preferences in terms of home improvement. Market Force Information uses a Composite Loyalty Index, which analyzes customer satisfaction, mystery shopping, and considers the number of complaints. Ace Hardware scored at the top with 68 percent on Composite Loyalty Index, leading by a landslide compared to the other frontrunners. Menard’s came in second with 57 percent, followed by Lowe’s with 54 percent, Home Depot with 53 percent, and surprisingly, Walmart with 36 percent. https://www.msn.com/en-us/lifestyle/lif ... li=BBnb7Kz |

Home Depot has 2,200 locations in North America. Menards has 305 locations. Lowes has 2,133. I think 57, 54 and 53 is probably within the margin of error, so that seems to be about even to me. Ace Hardware is good for certain things. I think they are generally good at repairing windows screens, the nuts and bolts are super expensive, but useful if looking for an unusual size, and they were pretty decent at duplicating keys. I think most of what they sell is cheaper at Menards, but sometimes it helps to have some specialized service. Menards is pretty great when they run their 11% rebates. It's like anything else certain things are better at Menards. I would say they are cheaper on most things than Home Depot. Home Depot and Lowe's have a much better selection of tools. Whether it's power tools, outdoor power equipment or hand tools, Lowe's and Home Depot have better stuff. Home Depot has decent paint. The thing to watch though is that sometimes Home Depot charges a restocking fee on returns. Home Depot will match Menard's rebates or accept Lowe's 10% off coupons, so that makes for a better deal. Home Depot's moving boxes are pretty good. Menard's can cut blinds in-store. Home Depot will cut wood in store for people and possibly PVC too. Home Depot has better toilets for home remodeling than Menard's. The self-checkout at Home Depot does get you out of the store faster and Home Depot has a great tool rental selection. I rarely go to Lowe's. I don't see much reason to go there. Although I did find a great deal on a tool set that was on clearance after Christmas. So there's always a chance for deals if you find a location that has clearanced stock. I like Farm & Fleet a lot, but it's a separate trip and they don't have great sales. So I don't tend to buy a lot there, but they do have some pretty nice power tools, hand tools and outdoor power equipment. If Farm and Fleet was closer I would probably be in there on a regular basis. |

Farm and Fleet is good for stocking up on a variety of fasteners, as they sell them by the pound. |
