Baseball seems to lend itself more to this topic than any other sport but I’d like to nominate Nikola Vucevic‘s 2019 season. 20-12-3.8 and this guy is not a great player at all. He’s decent. |

Shoutout to Nick Foles who had 27 TDs and 2 INTs one year and led the Eagles to a SB run years later but sucked every other year. Poor Jacksonville is likely to get the “every other year of his career” version. |

Jerry Stackhouse in 2001 29.8 points per game. Low efficiency, minimal impact, he was a role player masquerading as a star. |

Wayne Levi 1990, won 4 PGA events, won the PGA's newly minted Player of the Year award and finished 2nd on the money list, behind Greg Norman, ahead of Payne Stewart/Paul Azinger/Fred Couples/Hale Irwin / et al. Levi hadn't won a tour event the four prior years, was missing the cut half the time going into the 1990 PGA tour season. After 1990, Levi never sniffed the top 60 in tour money / ranking again, hovering in the 200-300+ area during his final years on tour. |

Jonathan Cheechoo was the first hockey guy who came to mind for me, but I got beaten to the punch. He got Joe Thornton in his prime to feed him goals in the wackadoodle everything's-a-penalty season, then once the league calmed back down, he never got it back together and was out of the league pretty soon after. Very weird. Tweener-but-mostly-AHLer Brandon Pirri scored an eye-popping 22 goals in 49 games for the Panthers in 2015. That extrapolates to 37 over 82, which, with an assist total usually commensurate with 37 goals, would have had him around 88 points, definitely a breakout season. But he only had two assists, it was the fluke of flukes, and he hasn't been able to hold an NHL job since. |
