The number was 7 digits....local. Then then they ran out of numbers and it became 10.

There it is. What a random function to create for the people. Came in handy though when power outages were more common.

We were pretty well off with our battery operated clocks.

Didn't it cost extra money to call?

We used to call that sports line for SEC scores when my dad's brother coached there. (It's unthinkable now.) It was $1.50 a minute or something.

I used to call santa during the Christmas season even though my parents told me not to. He came to our house drunk but my parents were home and sent him away.

Apparently we weren't well off then? It's probably true. My folks budgeted literally every penny. We had D size batteries for a couple flashlights in emergencies. We also used to take old wax and create new candles that we used during blackouts. I don't even think we used them that often. But you 'never know when your gonna need em'. Good times.

@ Tommy, the call was free in the great state of NM. I used it once in Chicago when I moved but cannot recall if a fee was associated with the service.
