I laugh at the people that celebrate (commemorate) this day of shame. I really couldn't think less of it all.

I seriously wish you would delete this thread.

Why do you say that? It seems as if it's a serious holiday in south Texas.

Stick with the fried chicken, avoid the ribs.

Yeah, it's not my favorite barbecue, but Hecky is a great guy.

It's an embarrassment befitting the idiots the "celebrate" it imho. I've still never seen a serious person defend it's importance or legitimacy. It's a queer push for victimhood and little more in many books. There's a reason it isn't celebrated in most Black communities and serious people.

It's more like "yay! Let's commemorate the slaves who were ignorantly kept around for another growing season by the good old boys".

I've never seen a more apt description of it.

And I can guarantee that I will never spend dollar one in Heckys. (& I'm contemplating a move to the area)

Fuck Hecky!

I don't think you're right here. First of all, it seems to be a regional holiday. I've never met anyone who really "celebrated" it in Chicago.

Also, your take that the slaves in far off places in what was then the West were somehow ignorant is almost certainly wrong. To begin with, there was no television or Internet and news traveled slowly. But the truth is most likely that it wasn't that the slaves didn't actually know that they had been freed by proclamation, but rather a case of what were they going to do about it?

Finally, if you want to take issue with an American businessman trying to capitalize on what perhaps should be a more somber holiday of reflection, okay, I can see that. I would say it's no different than a Fourth of July clearance or a Veteran's Day sale. But maybe you find those things untoward too. I could certainly understand that.

Finally, I'll say again, Hecky is a great guy.

Unless it's a Disneyworld recognized holiday, it's not worth celebrating.

I would be interesting in hearing more about the holiday. I see that it's become a thing on social media. And Vox says it's more important than ever:

We continue getting mediocre food from this place because my wife likes Hecky, too. I should have just married Joe Orr Road Rod. At least my financial situation would have improved.

Well, honestly, sometimes that is more important. You've got to eat. You're going to eat again later. Every meal doesn't have to be the end-all be-all.

No, I'd have to take down the "No Ike Reilly" banner to make room...

It's observed pretty seriously up in Milwaukee, as I recall.
