I turned on the TV while having lunch this afternoon and there was an esports league (Overwatch League) on ABC from 2 to 4. This has about as much appeal to me as The Dew Tour, but I kept it on for a few minutes out of curiosity and because I wanted to see who their advertisers are. There are five people on each team -- all of whom seemed to be male, so there will probably be an article on Jezebel about how problematic this all is -- and a decent crowd in Blizzard Arena in Los Angeles.

No, I had never heard of Blizzard Arena either.

Hearing the announcers get super excited at various points was kind of amusing.

There were commercials for Bud Light, Sleep Number Beds, Reese's, and Toyota. I was expecting Axe Body Spray, Skittles, and something like Monster Energy Drink, so I was kind of surprised at the type of sponsors they have. Although, I do know this sort of thing is very popular with kids these days so I guess I shouldn't be all that surprised.

If there was a TV show with kids playing games like Jungle Hunt, Zaxxon, Moon Patrol, Defender, etc. when I was 12 to 16 I probably would have watched it. Actually, now that I say that, there was game show from '82-'84 or thereabouts called Starcade I used to watch after school in which kids and their parents played arcade games.

Yeah they air it on TBS Saturday nights too.

My son enjoys watching ones where they play sports games like FIFA or Madden.

I knew I was getting old when I would flip through an issue of Reader's Digest at a doctor's office and think "Hmmm...there's some interesting stuff in here. Maybe I should get a subscription to this."

You should have known when you had to go to a doctor's office.

Can we have a Golf Clash TV broadcast?

Oh, Crazy Ivan's thumb slipped a little on that drive, that's going to ruin his chance at an eagle here on 7.

There are way too many people when told to "follow their passion" say they want to get a job making video games. The sad thing is there are some people who are seriously hooked on video games to the point where they want to live in a video game world instead of interacting with people. It's one of the top time-wasting activities known to man. I do acknowledge the esports people have talent, but it's mostly a waste of time to watch.

Interacting with people sucks. I don't blame people who just want to game all the time.

You should try to be a real life Super Mario, and fall in to a pit of fire.

My son is going to the Overwatch finals in Phily at the end of September. If I asked him if he wanted to go to a Bears/Blackhawks/Sox/Bulls game in Phily he would look at me like I was insane. It's a sign of the times, and us not getting it is because we are old....

He's still figuring out what he wants to study in college, but narrowing it down to some form of engineering. As he researches schools, whether or not they have an esports team is part of the process. I promise you he has no idea if the football or basketball programs are any good.

There is a good chance the next generation views the four major sports the way we do horse racing or boxing.

Esports and watching other kids open boxes are the future.

I like to play them a few times a week. How is watching someone else play them entertaining? Some little brothers went so long not being able to grab the controller from their older brothers that they decided to say 'I'll just spend 5 hours a day watching and pretending I'm having the same amount of fun!'

I asked one kid why watching other people play video games was fun and he asked how's it any different when you (me) watch other people play basketball on TV.

Because I can't put up 20/10 in a men's rec league, let alone the NBA.

I can go Harrier -> Chopper Gunner -> Nuke like no one's business in MW2. Anyone can with a bit of experience. The skill ceilings and floors are nothing like actual sports.

And MW2 is a heavy "skill based" PVP game. Fortnite? There is nothing to a sandbox game that resets every few minutes. That is one of the most popular games to stream. It is perplexing.

Many people say the same thing about watching someone else play "insert sport here".

My son enjoys playing baseball (from age 5 to now 17), but I don't think he has ever watched more than an inning or 2 on TV. However, he watches the esports stuff all the time.

I ended up watching the Counterstrike tourney. It was the finals with $200k on the line. It was incredible how good these guys were. If you came up across these guys online you would swear they were using some sort of aim bot. Headshots with pistols from long distance and shit. These teams even had coaches. I was never that good at FPS's so it was cool to watch.

If esports was around 10 years ago I would have made a lot of money in the NHL series. I'm not a top player in NHL anymore, let alone any other game.

My 7yo loves watching the youtube channels of people playing Minecraft. All the kids are into it. They watch those vids of little kids unboxing new toys and building legos.

watching the elite do something is always lost on those who don't understand it. whether it be regular sports or esports.

i spent heavy amounts of time playing beta CS all the way to source/steam. so its actually a decent watch. i know nothing of fortnight or overwatch so its completely lost on me.

Rush Short A, flashes and smokes, 3 high, 2 low. All Galils baby! Get that round W in less than a minute.

1000x more fun to do than to watch.
