Quote:
New York (CNN Business)The Walt Disney Co. strongly disputed allegations from family heiress Abigail Disney, who said she found workers struggling when she recently visited Disneyland undercover.

Abigail Disney, in an interview with Yahoo, said Disneyland workers told her they are forced to sift through "other people's garbage" for food, and they are struggling to stay happy. Abigail Disney said she went to Disneyland incognito to observe worker conditions and was "so livid" at what she saw.

In a new statement, the company told CNN Business Wednesday that Abigail Disney's account is "particularly egregious" hyperbole. It said that it ordinarily does not comment on "baseless reports," but it wouldn't "let this stand."

"This widely reported stunt is a gross and unfair exaggeration of the facts that is not only a misrepresentation, but also an insult to the thousands of employees who are part of the Disney community," a Disney (DIS) spokesman said Wednesday. "We strongly disagree with this characterization of our employees and their experience at Disney."

The company said it currently pays its workers an average of $19.50 an hour, which is more than double the federal minimum wage. Disney pays Disney employees a starting hourly wage of $15. The company has also committed $150 million to its Disney Aspire program that pays for workers to earn a college, high school or vocational degree. And it offers a number of other benefits, including subsidized childcare, leave policies, and access to pharmacies and clinics.

Abigail Disney told Yahoo this week that the work culture her grandfather Roy Disney promoted of respecting employees had slowly declined. She didn't immediately respond to request for comment on Disney's response.

Disney insists that the company respects its workers and improves their lives.

"The men and women who make Disney parks such a special experience for millions of people are dedicated, hardworking and proud, and we will continue to listen to, empower and reward them," the company said. "That's what this company has done throughout its history and will continue to do in the future."

Abigail Disney has frequently spoken out about how much more CEO Bob Iger's makes compared to average Disney workers. In April, she tweeted, "by any objective measure, a pay ratio over a thousand is insane." She also disclosed that she owned a few Disney shares but does not have any say over company operations.

In May, Abigail Disney addressed Congress on Capitol Hill.

"We need to change the way we understand and practice capitalism." She told members of a House committee that companies should deliver returns to shareholders "without trampling on the dignity and rights of their employees."

Based on what was said in the article, it doesn't sound like Disney treats its employees too shabbily.

Articles like this do make me wonder how long it will be before people start calling attention to the disparity between the salaries of professional athletes and the salaries of other team employees and employees of the arenas at which they play. It's not really the same thing, though, as the CEO of Disney isn't putting asses in the park the way Kevin Durant and Tom Brady put asses in the seats.

I know a few people who worked at Disney. They said that the Disney owned housing sucks, but other than that they were treated fairly well. The health insurance isn't great, but because they employ so many people its super cheap (like $5 a week, but this was a few years ago). You get free entry into any of the parks when you are off, and you can get friends/family passes pretty easily. The only thing that sucked was not a set schedule, and in some of the busy months you were basically "on call" and had to go in at a moment's notice.

The foreign students I knew that worked at Disney said that the education credits/$ they received was second to none. They also said that if you're a good worked, they go above and beyond helping you extend your travel visa and will even help with citizenship.

I'm sure its a pain in the ass cleaning up after kids in the Florida heat all day, but its probably beats stocking the shelves at Wal-Mart on the graveyard shift.

Disney is incredibly efficient at taking your money. Even more so than the Gov't.

I'd think that is a more desirable title than custodian or cashier. What's your issue?

Fairly accurate statement 30 years ago. I cannot imagine it is much different now.

There are certain areas that definitely more xrated. They have some wellness halls where booze, tobacco, and fun isn't allowed.

 My US roommate was Mormon. He was in GenPop. Smelled a little funny, but otherwise was an ok guy. The only true need would have been for Muslims that had a religious need. OR more likely...it was just like going to college. Parents said you could go IF you stayed in the 'virgin vault' or whatever. That didn't always mean those sent to the virgin vault liked it or lived by the rules. But the vault was there so the school could say it existed and the daughter could say she lived in it. Good times still took place albeit at a different pace.

I dunno. The cons in this paragraph seem to outweigh the pros pretty significantly. That last sentence sounds fucking awful for what I imagine they make.

I stand with Bob Iger. What he has done for the shareholders is nothing short of marvelous. Just wait until Disney + launches. Disney is going to topple Netflix when all is said and done.

Abigail was 11 years old when grandad shuffled off this mortal coil. She knows fuck-all about the culture of respect he promoted.

Disney share prices has gone up 4 fold under his leadership. He oversaw the acquisitions of Marvel, Star Wars, and Fox Entertainment. He is now launching a video distribution streaming service that will beat out Prime or Netflix in terms of content and likely will beat them in subscriber totals before long. If you think Netflix (down 10%) is having a bad day today. Just wait until their Q4 numbers fall off a cliff when people cancel the service for Disney+, which costs half as much.

Disney is going to supplant Netflix in "FAANG" when the dust settles. Netflix will still be around, but they won't be the company everyone is talking about. Name me a better CEO over the last decade.

Someone should ask her what Walt Disney's thoughts were on the jews.

I'm not betting against Netflix just yet.

HBO and other Premium channels, and Hulu will be the first to feel this.

Netflix has too much highly rated original content to get beat up. There are plenty of folks that aren't weirdly into Marvel / Star Wars and don't have kids...Disney+ isn't appealing to them. Not in the beginning....not until they develop a lot more.

Disney + is going to have all of Fox's programming as well, including The Simpsons.

I don't think Netflix's original content is enough. It speaks volumes that by far the most watched program on it is "The Office," which is leaving in a year.

Agreed. I don't care at all about Marvel or Star Wars so I'm not even gonna consider Disney+, cant even think of one thing I'd currently watch on there. I know I'm in the minority on that though.

Doesn't really change the scope of who is interested in Disney+ versus Netflix.

Netflix has no 'one show for everyone' that would have the volume of watching that The Office does. Netflix does have multiple quality shows that appeal to each individual person. There is a lot of programming.
