Cops are more likely to commit suicide than they are to be killed in the line of duty.

Thats surprising

There have been a few in the neighborhood. All the stress that comes with dealing with violence.

I worked with one years ago that did that. Her husband told her he was leaving her and she shot him and then turned the gun on herself.

It was shocking as she always seemed so even keeled at work.

Maybe, they just figure it’s better to off themselves rather than wait for some thug to do it?

Who knows?

I couldn't do that job. Forget about any of the dangers of the job for a minute; just dealing with all sorts of people at their worst moments would stress me to no end....

I agree that it's not just the dangers of the job itself (after all, the line of duty deaths are pretty low), but rather the marital or family stresses and/or substance abuse that often comes with the territory. And then throw in the lack of respect for your profession due to the recent spate of high profile bad apples.

We only see/hear about a select few bad cases involving cops and John Q public. I would guess the average CPD officer sees more gut wrenching drama that cannot be fixed than we will ever imagine. Stuff involving kids, when no clear police answer will solve a glaring problem would put me over the edge.

Imagine being a correctional officer and someone throws piss or shit at you? Because the inmates know where the cameras are they'll strike in a way you won't be able to retaliate the proper way without losing your job.

Truck drivers don't off themselves because they're not pussies.

GI Joe up in Fox Lake was trying to balance these numbers a bit, the hard way.

It is actually pretty close.

Suicides are up overall in the population. I am guessing with the police it's a combination of the stress of the job, increased scrutiny/oversite, and social media negative re-enforcement.

Could you imagine having to work with a body camera on so that each of your actions are recorded and judged if there is a mistake made? I am not saying that there isn't a good reason to have body cameras, but that sounds rather stressful.

I have an acquaintance who works for DOC. Used to work juvie. He talks of it being better now as at least there are programs available now but some of these guys basically suffer from ptsd. He switched from being a guard to a warehouse guy at prison and you can see the difference in him.

Wife’s cousin was a detective that dealer with trafficking stuff.. burn out rate was insane.. decided a Blackwater type gig was less stressful.
