Energy star, a government group that tells people how they should live their lives, shared with us today the most ridiculous shit ever. While writing their recommendations ina 72 degree office, they determined that no american should ever set their thermostat below 78 in the summer, mimicking the summer climate of your average wrinkle ranch minus the strong urine scent. When you're sleeping they recommend allowing your house to gain a sweltering additional 4 degrees, because sweating while trying to sleep makes everyone much more productive at work the next day. When you're not home, 85 is a great temperature according to government officials who have never had a pet of any kind, and have no idea how air conditioners work. Anyone who has tried to recover 85 degrees to under 80 when it's over 85 degrees outside would know much better than to follow this asinine advice, which apparently was written by sadistic fools who've never ventured south of 60 degrees north latitude. So set your thermostats to a temperature high enough to melt the balls off a billiards table and make some faggoty government flunky happy with himself tonight. |

Idk about energy star, but I tend to turn the temperature down 1-2 degrees when I sleep in the summer so that way I get more blasts of AC throughout the night (especially when I first lay down to try and fall asleep). Otherwise I was kind of raised at 79 degrees so.sometimes I'll tweak out the system to 78 or rarely even 77 to maximize AC when I need it, usually when the pair's running at 79 anyways and I know throwing it to 78/77 will just keep it going longer at the time. Obviously 72 is a pipe dream that I'm not rich enough to afford. Darkside's message shows you why he's in the ComEd hall of fame as well as the C/S/FMB HOF. Plus blowing up your AC unit from constant (over?)use = more work for him. Just make sure you lower that thermostat to 72 when it's just the pets at home and we won't call the animal board on you. |

If it's above 84 or humid.. I'll use the AC and i keep it at 76. Thats perfect for everybody, 76 with low humidity. |

I have the AC programmed on my ecobee thermostat, set to 72 overnight. I fell asleep in the recliner downstairs one night, and heard the AC on early in the AM, wife has been setting it down to 68 when she goes to bed to "get to sleep better". It stays there until 0600 and the next program change. Now I have to over ride her over ride some time after she is asleep. At least I can adjust it by my phone app! |

Sleep studies show humans sleep best between 60 and 70 degrees with the best quality sleep happening at the lower end. She might be on to something, mate. |

My AC is set to 71 all day. Some days my basement feels like a walk-in cooler... Screw energy star. 82 to sleep is just dumb. Other than really hot days, you could probably get your house to 82 at night just opening the windows. Why even have AC? |

LOL. Can you imagine walking home from the bus in January and you enter your 58 degree house? First thought: oh shit the furnace is busted. |

Hatchetman wrote: LOL. Can you imagine walking home from the bus in January and you enter your 58 degree house? First thought: oh shit the furnace is busted. The recovery time on 58 to 68 for most houses gotta be well over 90 minutes when it's not below zero. This doesn't take anything meaningful into account. Is it windy? Setbacks arent a good idea on windy days. Do you have a boiler? Positively should not be using setbacks if you have water heat. Is the outdoor temperature in the single digits? Forget your setbacks. And a hundred other factors. |

Darkside wrote: By the way... I'm a Scot of the ecobee thermostat. You got multiple sensors? Want some more? That one took me a couple minutes, nice. One t, right? Yes, I have one remote, upstairs in the kids' rooms hallway. Oldest sleeps downstairs in the guest room now (and apartment shopping); middle son is only here for fall semester, then off to life; daughter is up at university for the year, so I no longer really care about that area. In fact, I'm pretty sure the battery is already dead. But, it didn't really matter much, upstairs is always warmer than main, basement cooler than main. It's kinda physics that way. I like the ecobee- it was free through work. I'm not a Scot of the "follow me" part of the program. If my phone pings on the wireless network while working in or around the barn, the t-stat swaps to HOME mode even in the middle of the setback period. So, one minute of too-close-to-home gives me three hours of A/C (or heat) blasting with no one it the house. And no way to set a buffer time or stop that from happening. Otherwise, I like the app. |

Yes, after a phone conversation with the company, I just turned it off. I thought that was going to be one of the better parts of the unit- since I work the f'ed up rotating schedule, it would be nice (m f'er) if the t-stat would recognize those winter days when I'm in the house and keep the heat up. Not so much. And the three-hour minimum run time was most disturbing. If it can sense me being in, it can also read me as out, and back down. Cycle through every 15 minutes, say. No, not most efficient, but better than 2.75 hours of no-one-home heat. |

The cold radiating from the walls, floors, and ceilings doesn't dissipate immediately just because the furnace kicks on. |
