Have you boarded your dog? What was your experience? I need to board my dog for a week and I'm trying to find a place. There is a place near O'hare that has good reviews but they aren't cheap. |

None of them are cheap. We haven't had to with our dog, but when I was with my ex, we would have to...we used to use the Arlington Heights Animal Hospital...they boarded, too...they were good. Nothing above and beyond that stands out, and I haven't been there in like 10 years. |

I'm not married to it though. That's why I was trying to get a feel for others experience and places they may have used. |

It's not cheap. We have done it a few times so I would expect at least $50 a night. Bring your own food. You should consider a bath and nail clipping too. There are quite a few places in the suburbs (win again). Some places may require a pre-visit, so I would look into that. Also consider the facility. Is your dog going to be caged for 12 hours a day? Is there a play area inside and outside? How much play time do they get? When and how long is nap time? |

If you don't mind strangers in your place while you're out of town, probably cost less or about the same and be less risky to the pet (in terms of catching anything or getting into it with strange dogs) if you hired a local college girl off of craigslist/a pet-sitting app to pet-sit. They have flexible schedules and appreciate the extra cash. Note they'll prolly eat your food and drink your booze; plus we had one girl run up charges on the PPV. But we did tell her to make herself at home while she was hanging out for a few hours daily to play with the pets. |

Unless you fancy your house turned into their personal party-pad/fuck-shop for the week. |

 everyone can use a bath and nail clipping even if they don't need one. We have also used the Rover app and had a recent college grad girl watch the dogs for three nights at our house. That was only $46 a night vs. $50 each per night. |

Doug is wise. Visit the place first. Make sure your dog is socialized and good with other dogs to avoid fights and whatnot. A petsitter staying or visiting your home a few times a day may end up being cheaper, and less stressful as your dog stays in his/her own environment. If you have never left your dog boarded or at a daycare, I would recommend doing a trial run where you drop the dog off for a day or half a day to see how things go. |

We always board our dog with our vet. They know him, and they know his history and we know that he will be taken care of. It is still stressful for him and he is always very happy to get home, but leaving him there allows us to not worry too much about him while we are gone. We live way out in the sticks compared to most of you, and our small-town vet only charges $15 a day. |

We pay $50/night for our service, which includes a large play area for the dogs and a bunch of internet-accessible petcams so you can check up on your pooch anytime you want. |

I've been lucky enough to have family I trust watch our dogs when necessary, but I know a few people who have used Pawsitively Heaven out of Chicago Ridge, and they love it. All the advice in this thread is solid. |

Make sure all your vaccinations are up to date and bring a printout from the vet when you drop him/her off. I can vouch for a place in Oak Park called Doggie Day Play. I think its about $55 now. Long-term best bet is to find a boarding partner you can drop him off at and vice versa. My dog is psychotic so that doesn't work for us. |

Good luck. I’ve been using the same place the last12 years or so. I’ve had to use him quite a bit and we’ve gotten friendly enough that he will help me anytime when there has been emergencies. Definitely have the dog up to date on the shots and stuff. My dog is wiped out after being there. As Doug said it can be a great time to get them groomed so when you get back you have a tired and clean animal for a few days. Finding a good place to board is a nice thing to have in the back pocket. I have never tried having someone come to the house but it makes a lot of sense and the dog is comfortable at home. You don’t have to go out of your way to drop off or pick up. |
