The latest episode of HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, currently streaming on HBO GO and HBO NOW, includes a 15-minute segment on Cherry’s blossoming — and the tear-jerking transformation of some of the 47 other dogs from Vick’s dogfighting ring 12 years ago. Dogs Deserve Better, an organization that focuses on rescuing chained and penned dogs, turned Bad Newz Kennels into the Good Newz Rehab Center.

The show also includes some extraordinarily graphic and upsetting scenes of dogfighting at Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels, and an interview with investigator Jim Knorr, who helped to break up the ring.

But the primary focus of the segment is on the surviving dogs and their current lives — the pups have not only become family pets, but canine athletes and therapy dogs. They have also transformed the dog-rescue community; no longer are dogs saved from fighting rings automatically killed, instead, they are kept alive and helped.

Yes, she is. We had a nice PM exchange back in March of ‘08 when we lost our dog, Sam. Her dog was diagnosed with cancer and only given a few months. Sam got sick on a Sunday and died the following Thursday. Not sure which was worse.

I only interacted with her through a screen, but HHJ was a fine lady and is still missed by those of us she touched.

Every time I drive by O'Hare, I still think about that Mac Jurko and Harry remote at Harry Caray's Rosemont around Christmastime where we hung out all day and got blizted with her, among other CFMB'ers

The first time I ever met her she gave me a big hug and acted like we had been friends for years - this was very early in my board existence.

I'll never forget that - as a person coming to some weird message board outing and thinking it might be awkward. She made it seem completely normal and was a great and funny person.

I hope she is smiling.
