My company has had a close relationship with United Way for years. What irritates me is that my company not only requires participation at the annual meeting/presentation, they also ask for a suggested amount depending on your title.

Try this.

"I choose where to spend my time and money with other charities. Your suggestion is appreciated though."

They can't legally "require" anyone to give a nickel to any group.

I’ll be able to stand up to the pressure. I was looking to hear other people’s stories. Isn’t this thing sort of old fashioned?

The United Way sucks. Why do we need a "holding company" to distribute charitable funds? Just give directly to charities/organizations you want to support and cut out the middle man. The CEO of the United Way made over a million bucks last year.

Yep, me too...and it's a total fraud.
The waste an administering and marketing United Way campaigns is disgusting.

Our company is similar, but the part I don't get is that they only want 100% participation- even if you don't want to give anything. Just put in a zero, and hand the form back in. Doesn't cost you a dime and they are paying you for the time it takes to write the zero, and giving you the pen with which to craft said zero. But about half of my shift coworkers refuse to even do that. Like they are making some Tienamin Square type of protest.

Put in a negative amount and see if they pay you!

Sure sounds like it. If that type of shit was mandatory at my job I would find a new job.

Well, maybe you would, but I don't see it as a deal breaker. I give them $1 per pay period, so $26 per year. True, it is not the most efficient charity, nor do I completely agree with all the causes they support, but the good things they do do (ha), are okay by me.

But, no one has to give. They just ask everyone to respond, I just can't see what's so tough about that. They aren't asking for your cell number or email, they hand you a form and you mark a zero and hand it back.

To quit a job where I refer to myself as grotesquely overpaid, just over an annual charity request seems short-sighted.
