I find it amusing that the modern person thinks people in the past were ignorant rubes and how we are so much more sophisticated today. We could never be taken in by a "medicine show".

It got me thinking about the biggest "medicine show" of my lifetime: Y2K.

I was lucky enough to see them both. Dr. Hook at the “Old Chicago” theme mall back in my youth (circa 1979) and Dr. John at Summerfest in Milwaukee in the early 90’s.

Old Chicago had some pretty big names back in the day including Chuck Berry, The Four Tops, Chubby Checker, Blood Sweat & Tears, The Guess Who, The Ramones and The Jam.

I think about that place every time I get on 55 coming from Bolingbrook. I can still see the empty arcade of shops and smell the electricity burning there. And God knows I loved going there.

Yeah Old Chicago was a thing wasn't it? As for Dr. Hook, whenever I hear one of their songs on Sirius/XM 70s I can't help picturing that pirate patched straw hat dope looking guy from a 70s tv broadcast performance like Bandstand. He might even have had a friggin parrot.

I've been around the block a few times and my conclusion is Elite is gifted at birth. You either have a cannon for an arm or you don't. You either have the quick twitch or you don't. You either have supersonic vision and reaction time or you don't.

I think the crazy parents and their money can make their kids serviceable over their natural talents. I also think though they are as likely to drive them away and into bad things.

I think it's more than likely they get driven away. It's pretty discernible whether a kid has a love and desire or he likes being around his friends. Once puberty has set in, it's easier to push an elite kid. The stars get the cheerleaders.

I argued with my computer nerd wife about the scam that was Y2K last night. She insisted it was not a scam and that preparation was the right thing to do. I was like, wait a minute. The smartest guys in the fucking world, they can program anything, they can make a super computer that fits in your pocket, but they were uncertain about what was going to occur at 12:01 on January 1, 2000? Really? I call absolute bullshit. These fuckers knew that the only thing that was going to happen was a wrong date, but they sold software and consulting services for billions of dollars. It sure beats mixing elixirs next to a horse drawn wagon!

You are actually both kind of right and kind of wrong. Y2K was a major problem though the year 2038 is a MUCH larger problem. The thing is that Y2K was fixed because of the panic and the huge money spent on it. It was known about for years prior and patched in any vital system well before it would have been an issue. It did make for a great media story which kept it in the news all the way up to the day.

OMG! What's gonna happen in 2038? Do I need to contact John McAfee for assistance?

In the year 2038, we hit the max date allowed in most computer systems. So they will roll over to an incorrect date of some sort.

Luckily, we have 19 years to figure it out and given my calculations climate change will end us all about 10 years before it happens.

I don't know about that...I remember reading that Italy basically said fuck it and didn't spend a single lira...and came out of it ok.
