What was it and how much did you make? When I was 15, I was hired as a dishwasher at the since defunct Rosario's Italian Foods at 86th & Pulaski. Great little mom and pop Italian grocery store the likes of which you rarely see anymore. I made $5.35 per hour. I ended up learning a lot there and helped make sauces, meatballs, beef, sausage, etc. I worked there on and off until I graduated high school. I think I made $6.00 an hour when I left. I also had a paper route from 4th-8th grade handing out a local neighborhood newspaper that printed every other week, tips only. I typically made about $20 per route which in the 4th grade was Deni$ type money back then. |

Shop -n- Save food store 3300 or so west 63rd st. I assume $3.35 an hour. All the fun and lifelong friendships made were a fringe benefit. |

I was ten years old and delivered the Daily Herald in my neighborhood. About 30 houses got daily delivery. I believe my monthly checks were $25. I lost the job at 15 because they moved to adult drivers. |

I was 11 and I asked a guy selling watermelons from his truck on Stony Island if I could work for him. He paid me $50 a week and I bought a bunch of cards and candy. Someone in my family saw me and realized that I wasn't going to the park. I got in trouble but convinced the power that be to allow me to continue working. I've been employed every year since then. |

My first job was at Shop 'n Save on West 63rd St. I don't remember anyone I worked with... My second job was at Gallop Men's Wear at Ford City Mall. I did not see any dead bodies. Lots of cute girls worked at The Limited and Payless Shoe Source on either side of our store, though. |

Stock boy at Grey's IGA grocery store. I really wanted to work at Forest Hills CC in the bag room and a job opened up there the same day I started at Grey's. I quit after one day. Both paid minimum wage but got tips at the club and could play on Mondays. |

I passed out the Joliet Herald News as a kid. Back then it was delivered in the afternoon and you had to go door to door every 2 weeks to collect payment. At 16 my 1st summer job was for the Will County Zoning Department making blueprints and gluing mylar symbols (agricultural/residential/industrial etc) onto area maps. I think I made $4.15 an hour. Once school started I began an extended career sequence working at the Jewels bagging groceries and stocking shelves. It initially paid around $3.85 an hour, but thanks to the wonderful negotiating power of the UFCW (and the great Cub Foods panic of the late 80's) I made less each time I returned during summer from college. |

You know what images that shit conjured up. They actually stuck a garden hoe in between my legs while I was picking weeds.. Not cotton picking but close enough. |

Frank Coztansa wrote: long time guy wrote: Got whacked after the first 4hrs first day. Shocking. No shocked that you'd be the one shocked either. FWIW I actually dissed the hell out of my cousin for getting fired from the gig before I got out to Madison. Told him that he didn't know how to hold a job. Apparently neither did I though I wasn't actually all that disappointed with the outcome. Felt like they'd did me either a favor actually. |

I washed dishes for a few weeks at Canton Chef in Schaumburg wt like 13 or 14 but my first w2 type job was at ace hardware in arlington heights. It's gone now, some buffalo wild wings is there now (biesterfield and arlington hits) but that was also the best job I ever had. I loved it. Never felt like going to work. I learned so much there too bow to do shit and build shit. It was great. |
