Got one when I moved states and needed a new DL anyway. Passport, old DL, and a couple of utility bills were enough for me. Wait was 2.5 hours but if I wasnt in a hurry I could have made an appointment for 8-9 weeks later and been out in 20 minutes. DL is good for 8 years, photo is good for 16. Illinois sucks. |

I've been hearing about much longer waits at our Secretary of State offices, even the remote ones we used to drive to for quick service, but recently found out we here in The Mitten can make an appointment and walk to the front of the line! |

Caller Bob wrote: Pushed back, 1 year https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/25/politics ... index.html Oh good. Maybe by then Illinois can issue a DL that actually meets this stupid rule and we wont have to bribe the state to make us another ID that complies. |

I'm glad. My license expires in 2021. I would have had to get a Real ID, and then renew my license again 8 months later. |

I did it in January. I recall it took about 2 1/2 hours and that I was not thrilled with all the inefficiencies I perceived in the process. That frustration seems so inconsequential now. |

If you have a passport, bring it with you to the DMV. The forms the State of Illinois had online for Real ID Renewal documents (for address change) were fUCKING wRONG! Our State fucked up...shocking, I know. |

Our State fucked up...shocking, I know. Definitely need passport. The missus is an accountant and a stickler, and so she had everything, and they still tried to trip us up. Went three or four weeks ago, just as this COVID thing was starting. It was funny because they didn't want us standing while waiting; they forced us to sit in the seating area. Like, they literally searched the area and, like a fourth-grade teacher, said, "Here's a seat here, and there's one over there!" There was about an inch between each seat. It's just weird because now Gov. Chubs would fine you for being that close to people. Three hours. |

My wife went late February as her license was expiring March 2nd. I poured over the forms and made sure she had multiple backups of everything...but, they wouldn't give her a Real ID without her passport or birth certificate. Like her non-expired license wasn't good enough to prove that she was her. fucking stupid. |

Considering an organism 1 billionth our size brought the world to it's knees, how about we fucking scrap this Real ID as it was pointless to begin with? |

If you have a passport - which it seems most in this thread do - what benefit is there to having the real ID? Can't you just use the passport until your existing drivers license expires?

They know EXACTLY who is passing through the airport on any given moment. The Real ID was just another step to peaking into the privacy of citizens. Power grab, nothing more. Safety? suck my dick |

There is an interactive checklist on line: https://realid.ilsos.gov/checklist.html It walks you through what to bring. Passport is one of MANY options. Even though I have a passport I wanted the wallet-size Real ID so I would not be having to remember to bring my passport or wonder where I put it each time I fly domestically. Which in this day and age seems like it will be never. |

If requiring a Driver's License or State ID to vote is racist, wouldn't the Real ID requirement for air travel also be racist? Asking for a friend. |

Maybe. I'm still trying to understand how an ID requirement is suppression. Pretty much can't do anything without an ID, but when required for voting it's suppression and racist. Just trying to understand why my logic is racist so I can be a better person. |

Thanks, Frank that clears it all up. I had no idea showing proof of who you are to validate your identity and address is violation of your constitutional right. |

I think that, since other ways exist to prove residency, etc., requiring an ID that is not free might be considered a poll tax. I registered online and voted in person this year without showing any form of state-issued ID. |

Just trying to understand why my logic is racist so I can be a better person. For the planes, it's not racist. Anyone who says so is an idiot and is just whittling votes away from Democrats. We need to move past racism (and now diversity) being the foundation of all other sin. I don't think it's racist to require people to have IDs to vote, but it can turn out to be systemically racist, or at least produce similar effects. It's more classism, anyway. Some people feel they have no need for an ID, and others have little idea of how to get them. I know the second part of that sounds crazy stupid, but so many people are not in the mainstream. I think they should bring the DMV on the road to some of the folks in the backwoods, hinterlands, sticks, Drunksquirrelburgs, boondocks, and outbacks. That will go a long way to solving some of the problems (if they exist) with voter suppression. Just as you register them to vote, give them an ID. And then make it a rule that we need an ID to vote. So I can see why some people might say needing an ID to vote is systemically racist, but often they just say "racist" (and my response is "blow me") and they come up with no other solutions. Look, I don't want the government tracking me, but it's not too much to require us all to have an ID to vote. And if it is too much for certain people, let's meet 'em halfway. If we want to solve this problem, we will. I guess every moral strategy has its disadvantages. Virtually no one disagrees that being able to point out various kinds of racism has been good for the country. and civil rights leaders have often successfully centered their work around race. And we're not done, etc. The negative side is that, at least today, some people often stop at screaming "racism!" or "diversity!" Or they start some local program which lasts three months and helps five people to three cans of food and then proceed to brag about it in op-eds and dissertations for the next 12.6 years. Just like the people who came up with slogans like "at will employment" and "I'm not here to talk about the past," these people need to be called out on their bullllllshit. These reactions produce nothing; they're sterile, unfruitful. |

Then tell them to make getting an ID part of their family culture. Raise your kids to do this! (and chip the ID so we can track the movements of the lower classes. #sorrynotsorry ) |
