Here's the basics of every speech my father gave me...

Before my daughter runs a cross country race I always tell her the hours of practice build up to 19 or 20 minutes of temporary pain which will then give her a lifetime of satisfaction that she gave her very best. I’m not Knute Rockne but she seems to respond to that mindset.

Not much of a speech, but whenever my kids are going out somewhere, the only thing I say is "don't be dumb". I've pretty much left it up to them to decide what that means, but so far, so good.
