How do you parents out there who have kids in these school districts feel about dropping the grading scale?

My kids got + or checks in preschool and kindergarten. Starting in 1st grade they were on the A-F scale. I believe some Catholic schools don't get there until 3rd grade.

Hey, speaking of library-as-weekly-class, did anyone else who went to grade school in the '90s have to deal with the administration giving the school library some dumbass obfuscatory name? Like, we would have each day's schedule written out on the board and one day "IMC" was listed. I asked what "IMC" was. She said it was "the Instructional Material Center." I asked what that was. She said it was the library. I asked why we couldn't call it the library. She said because it's an instructional material center. Remembering this now, I think that conversation as much as anything was what led to the Ritalin prescription.

I was in high school at the start of the 90s but I'm pretty sure the Library was called a resource center in grammar school and Junior High.

See, for us, the resource center was the little room at the end of the hall for the kids who were too on the ball for special ed but still couldn't read well enough to stay in class.

Thinking back, in middle school we had the LMC, or Library Media Center, which is a little clearer about being a library but still kind of an unnecessary flourish. I think it was because schools were excited about having 25 Macs and a dot-matrix printer.

Intelligence frightens people. Inquisitive children are typically bored and tend to act out when not intellectually challenged. It's easier and cheaper to give them a pill to pop than to get them into expensive gifted class.

3rd grade, I had some absolute throwback (even by 1994-95) schoolmarm who had zero patience for any sort of restless energy in kids, particularly boys. We had to sign all our assignments with our "NDT," as in Name/Date/Time, and if we logged the incorrect time, our scores got docked for either lying about or not being able to tell time. Every day's schedule was written out to the minute, not just when we would go to specials but all the stuff in class. It was what I'm pretty sure was a very regimented environment for third grade, confirmed the next year when our teacher was extremely chill, classmates from one of the other four rooms the year before more or less asked all the Mrs. S______ kids why we all seemed kinda PTSDy, and no one was put on drugs.

Everybody has a positive self image though.

I think my kids started getting grades in 4th grade. They had a couple pages on the meet and exceed stuff. It's really terrible.

Back in the 70s, we had the softer scale for K-5, and a soft version of A-F (1/2+/2/2-/3) for middle school.

My K-8 had a LOT of tracking. It was gifted/remedial in one class, average in the other. Grades 1-4 for gifted/remedial were "multiage" so that clusters of kids could be formed and reorganized by topic, and on the extremes it was very self paced. Middle school was tracked the same way but they just made the gifted kids sit and be bored, so at least I spent all of 8th grade math studying the tight ass of the young lady at the seat to my right and wondering if Steven Dick's parents were as stupid as he was.

You ever look at the PARCC or MAP practice questions? Some of it isn't grade appropriate, it's not really in textbooks, and the teachers are prepping the kids for it. It's weird.

I liked the Iowa basic test but I'm nerdy. It made sense. None of this makes any sense.

I remember taking the Iowa tests in 3rd grade. We did a lot of practice on narrative, expository, and persuasive five-paragraph essays, because we wouldn't know which one our prompt would be. The practice prompt for persuasive was always arguing for or against whether schools should serve McDonald's for lunch. I remember this because we beat this into the ground to the extent that I asked why we couldn't argue anything other than McDonald's for lunch. The prompt on the actual 1994-95 Iowa test was whether schools should serve McDonald's for lunch.

The school used to occasionally serve us McDonald's in 2nd or 3rd grade.

In the 80's it was still the "Library". Early 90's I was in college and that's when the name changing started. "Dorms" HAD to be referred to as "Residence Halls". The "Cafeteria" HAD to be referred to as the "Dining Center". I worked in one of those said "Dining Centers" and the civil service FT manager (who I actually loved and respected dearly) corrected me on a daily basis. it's impossible to call it the "dining center" when people on-campus and 3 hours away in the summer see you and go "it' the CAFETERIA guy!"
