Why is this such a popular fad? Almost everyone at my office tracks it so today I finally checked out the Health app and I’m now at 10,400 and I didn’t even try to walk any more than normal today. This seems very doable and even if you’re chained to a desk 8 hour it doesn’t really seem all that tough to make up for it. |

The number 10,000 has nothing to do with anything. The Japanese guy that came up with 10,000 steps idea did so because the Japanese character for 10,000 looks like a dude walking. |

I read that in Atlantic article I googled today and laughed. Confirmed it was a kind of nonsensical thing to keep track of. |

I continue to believe those "steps monitors" were designed for overweight women to convince themselves that because they hit the 10,000 step mark they can have a pint of Chunky Monkey. |

I've dropped nearly 20lbs since January. Cutting back on booze, snacking less, and portion control plus exercise. It's insane how easy it to pack on pounds sitting behind a desk all day. It's tough too. Feeling stressed or shitty really makes you want to over-indulge to numb those feelings. |

My company started a monthly step challenge last summer and it really took off, people are walking all over the place. They have individual awards and team awards between our different offices around the country. I can tell you that even on a very typical day, 10k is a pretty low bar. |

man of few opinions wrote: My company started a monthly step challenge last summer Are there 12 of them?To Franky's point, the extra steps does no good for the people that drink pop every day. I plan to walk MANY golf courses this upcoming season. Inclement weather will probably be the only thing that stops me. Depending on the course and how many times I slice, that is likely to be around 9,000-11,000 steps. |

what is that, about 5 miles? I have a monitor on my phone but I don't have it on me for any short walks. I have to make an effort to get to 5 miles in a day. Maybe all those little trips add up but I'm usually at about 3. |

I’m guessing the people with the most steps at our company are the ones that walk out to the smoking hut in the parking lot every hour on the hour. |

10,000 steps is over 5 miles. or, if youre using an app to track it, about 1 mile at most. they dont magically count your steps... they use a gyro sensor and are horribly inaccurate. |

Cocaine numbs those feelings and can help lose weight as well. |

I had a watch that tracked it on on once during a day my ass was glued to a tractor seat for 16 hours. Had 30 or 40k steps and climbed a hundred flights of stairs while in reality probably took less than 1000 steps all day. |

When I walk, I get almost exactly 2,000 steps per mile, and when I run it’s about 1,700. There is a guy I work with who drives around on a fork truck all day logging steps all day long. He gets 25k-30k a day driving around. I usually get 20k on a weekday and 30-40k on a weekend day. |
