Frank's post got me thinking about my own stupidity as a parent. My oldest daughter was probably 2 months old and I'm home alone with her. I'm in my bed playing with her and for some reason I put her down to go warm up breastmilk. I prop her up on a pillow in place her in the center of my bed (I thought). Within seconds of making it to the kitchen I hear a sound. No crying but I still go back to my room to see if it came from there. My daughter had fallen off the bed and was just about to let out the most horrifying sound you can imagine. I pick her up, look her over and try to comfort her. She stops crying after about a min. I think I should rush her to the hospital but I'm unsure. I page the pediatrician and she calls me back immediately. Basically tells me to not allow her to go to sleep for a while and take her to the hospital if I see anything unusual. At that time there was a desk and chair next to my bed that she missed by inches. My unintentional carelessness could have killed her. She was fine. I told her mother when she came home. She was kind enough to wait a couple of days to beat me up and tell me that I would have killed her if she would've done the same thing. I also wiped her in the wrong direction for about a month and cut her finger trying to clip her nails. I've told her any problems she has in life are likely my fault. |

I bought ice cream from Culver’s for my wife and I and ate it in front of my stepson when I knew he would want some. Seriously though it was probably the summer of 2017 when my step daughter lived with us. My brother was dying and we had to be out of town for about 10 days. He passed and after the funeral we drive home to find our house completely trashed and all of our plants dead. A week later she lipped off to my wife and I told her she had two weeks to pack her shit and go live with her dad. In the end it probably was a good thing it happened but it felt like the worst thing I ever did. |

I doubt that there's a parent who wasn't negligent in watching a small child, had something happen that could have been disastrous, but got lucky it didn't sink to that level. Mine involved empty-headedly leaving some attachments for a food processor where my then 2 yo youngest could get them from their box. The blood from the one(two?) cut finger(s) was bad enough, but the icing on the cake was the ER nurse who noted that it was the second time in 12 months that we'd brought him in because of his accidents. She did me a favor though as it blunted my wife's anger over my stupidity. I forget what her stupidity was a year earlier. |

we had a foster child who was about 1...1.5 yrs old...he was a dude who when i was home wanted to be around me all the time even if i had to go to the bathroom. so one time he follows me into the bathroom, i give him a book and kind of preocupy him and start peeing. he then gets up and starts walking over to me, i'm like oh no, he then grabs the toilet seat, slips and falls, which makes me react to try and pick him up and proceed to pee all over him. probably the worst thing as a parent i've ever done. |

Worst day of my life, hands down. Fall of 2000, we're harvesting corn, and I am running wagons back and forth from the field to unload. I like to use the antique tractors for jobs like this, just to keep them working. (Who am I kidding, all my shit is antique, even me) Both my boys are helping out, riding along. I use our smallest old John Deere to take an empty gravity wagon to the field, and come back with no full one, so both boys are standing on the tractor tongue. Stuff I did growing up all the time. My youngest starts fo fall off- its about a foot to the ground, no snow, soft grass, he's bundled up in a work coat, but he doesn't want to fall, so he kinda pivots around on one foot. Well, his coat gets snagged by the tire, which pulls him through between the tire and the fender and whips him down between the front and rear tire of the moving tractor. I slam on the brakes, and stop before I crush his head with the rear tire, but when he came through, his legs were whipped around, and he hit his shin on an angle iron holding up a step. At first, he stared at me and I at him, and all was okay, then he stood up. Screaming and crying, I couldn't calm him down. Carry him to the car and drive to the ER. Sure enough, broke his tibia, more of a dent than a break as four-year-old's bones are still very soft. Full-leg cast and wheelchair. He soon gets a walking cast and does really well, even swims over Christmas at the in-law's in AZ. By soccer season, he's running full tilt, and can't remember which leg he broke. He ended up being one of the fastest kids he played with in any sport, no ill effects. While we are in AZ, of course everyone asks about the cute kid running on his cast, and I'm still pretty emotional about nearly killing my own son. Guy at the pool tells me that he did just that, ran his son over with a loader tractor and crushed him. I almost lost it. Having to call my wife and tell her was the worst. |

I haven't told too many people what happened, it actually is tough to recount nearly 20 years later. To think what we could have missed out on... |

I’m terrified of things like this. Now that the kids are older a little less so but this shit. An happen so fast. |

I was working on a farm one time and we went to another farm to pick up one thing or another. My boss told me that that farmer's kid was killed when he got caught in one of those olde tyme hay elevators and got torn apart. And then he pointed to the elevator where it happened. Yikes! |

Lots of stories like that. Worse one I heard was a dad was driving a combine and kid electrocuted when Cb antenna hit an over head wire. I’m unclear if the kid was outside and grabbed the ladder thus completing the ground or what... impossible to imagine. |

I don't know if classifies as bad parenting. I was doing yard work and my daughter was in the backyard, I can see her from the side since I have a corner lot. Anyway, I went to get an item from the backyard then went back out. I looked in the yard and I didn't see my daughter. I went in the backyard and couldn't find her. I'm yelling her name and I see her out the corner of my eye looking through the fence from the sidewalk. She had followed me back out when I retrieved a tool from the backyard. Gave me a heart attach. |

I look back on things and there is so much more I could have done and so many things I should have done. Sins of omission and commission out of ignorance or just plain laziness. |
