I still remember the parody - It's the end of the year as we know it, it's '95 |

There wasn't another band I hated more than REM back in their heyday. Unfortunately, their heyday was my heyday. |

Unlike doc, I don’t hate them. |

REM is a strange band story. Athens alternative college legends break big flash hot then gone. More bands should stay for a while and go. |

I read somewhere that they avoided the pitfalls of jealousy most bands face by dividing the pie up 25% for each member as far as royalties and publishing goes no matter who contributed what to each song . Smart way to do it . |

Quite the contrast between his Press conf and those of Trump. He is much more informed for one and he seems to have vision as. to how he wants to steer his state out of it. |

Amazing what competence and simple honesty can do for a nation. |

As the board’s dumbest musical guy, I can at least recall a story I heard about the origins of What’s the Frequency Kenneth. Heard a similar story about the origins of Leonard Skinner....aka Lynyrd Skynyrd. |

pittmike wrote: REM is a strange band story. Athens alternative college legends break big flash hot then gone. More bands should stay for a while and go. That is absolutely not what happened. They hung around making one subpar album after another following Automatic for the People in '92 and only broke up for good about four or five years ago. They should have done what you said, all we would have lost would have been, I dunno, "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" badrogue17 wrote: I read somewhere that they avoided the pitfalls of jealousy most bands face by dividing the pie up 25% for each member as far as royalties and publishing goes no matter who contributed what to each song . Smart way to do it . Radiohead does an even five-way split even though it's Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood who handle most if not all songwriting duties. Ed O'Brien is one of rock history's great passengers; sometimes I think his real job in the band is to handle media relations because Thom Yorke is such a tedious pain in the ass. |

Post subject: | Re: It’s the end of the world |
It occurs to me that what pittmike is actually describing is the trajectory of the other big jangle-band-with-a-sexually-ambiguous-singer of the '80s, the Smiths, who exploded onto the scene in '84, made an all-time classic with The Queen Is Dead in '86, and broke up acrimoniously by '87. And why? Largely because the bassist and drummer found out the royalties were split 40-40-10-10 with Morrissey and Johnny Marr getting the bigger shares. Also because Morrissey was in love with a man who couldn't love him back, but the money split kind of ties the whole conversation back together. |

You didn't miss a thing. I was never a huge R.E.M. fan. I like a bunch of their songs and love a few, but as a band they're of no sentimental value to me, not like the Smiths or the Mountain Goats. |

I got into Green...but after that lost interest. Right around that time I saw them at the Cap Center in DC. Their music didnt work for me in such a large venue. |

Shouldn’t a band that makes a song like Shiny Happy People be automatically relegated to the trash bin of music history? |

denisdman wrote: Shouldn’t a band that makes a song like Shiny Happy People be automatically relegated to the trash bin of music history? Not when that album has "Losing My Religion" and "Texarkana" on it, and besides, "Shiny Happy People" isn't a bad song, people just like to put on a show of hating it. It's the Barney of alternative music. GoldenJet wrote: I got into Green...but after that lost interest. Right around that time I saw them at the Cap Center in DC. I've never heard anyone speak nostalgically of it. |
