If you guys are starving for sports here is a youtube video of the worst sporting event of my life. Deerfield vs Mt Carmel. For a little background, we came in as #1 in the state and Mt. Carmel came in as #2 and having won 2 straight state titles. I sucked back then, being an overweight miscast defenseman. Wore #4 for Deerfield. My d partner was really good, Todd Reirdon...is now the head coach of the Washington Capitals. Our best player was Rob Woodward who ended up being drafted high in the 2nd round of the NHL draft.

I forgot all about this and then this morning a hockey buddy called me up to tell me he watched it last night and said it was a great game. I disagree that it was a great game.

I still say to this day that we win the game if its not at the Chicago Stadium. We only ran 2 lines while Carmel ran 4. Ice at Stadium was so soft it was like skating in slush. We ran out of gas and in the end blew a 3-1 3rd period lead.

To this day I have never watched the game. Hurts too much. That said, I finally came to peace with it in 2013 after my USA team won Gold at the Maccabei games. I felt like I had finally accomplished something great and the weight of that 1988 loss had finally been lifted. I think I'm ready to watch that game now.

Two great teams. Many of my friends (including two of my closest friends) were on that team and they won in 86, 87, 88, and 90. They should have won in 85, too. Mount Carmel's most dominant sport was hockey . . . until the demographics changed and St. Rita moved.

Hockey games were great fun. 80% of the white kids went to the games.

Such an accomplishment (on your part, I mean). What a talent to have!

This is fun to watch.

They had a good 3 year run from 92-94. 95 was cancelled by IHSA and after that wrestling was good but over taken by Providence then Rita and now Montini.

My Junior year Hockey lost to New Trier in the title game and won three straight Kennedy cups when I was there. Now they are barely competitive.

I didn't know him till 20 years later, but a buddy/teammate of mine Emmett McCarthy. was a freshman 4th liner on the 88 team. He was probably one of the better players on that 90 team. The guy who called me today was a freshman at Carmel in 88, but was playing AAA hockey instead. He was probably on that 90 team. named Greg Mitchell. He's the step brother of Emmett.

You know those guys? Great guys despite the terrible high school they went to

 I remember Emmett McCarthy, at least by name. I was a senior then--it sounds like we are the same age--so I knew all the older guys on the team.

That was a great game.

Those were the last good Carmel teams. It's a shame having grown up seeing them always dominant struggle to reach .500.

They've come in second in wrestling several times since the Williams brothers, and they still have lots of individual champions, but those vultures at Rita have siphoned off talent.

Talent of any kind amazes me, and it's life-affirming to see people continuing their sport (shakes) or get into coaching (conns). Or jamming about Julia Child!
