You're welcome! Joe Orr Road Rod wrote: The Hawk- Were you at Kent State at the time the National Guard rioted? Did you do your undergrad there? Did you play baseball there? I went into the service in Jan 1969 and got an early out to register for fall semester of 1970. I was in Nam when the Kent State riots occurred. May of 1970. I was a grad assistant for the baseball team while at Kent State but didn't pay baseball there. They had Thurmon Munson and Steve Stone when I was in grad school there and played flag football against Munson who was an awesome athlete and tough as hell. HE ran me over a couple of times while blocking for his ATO fraternity against my grad school team and loved doing it.

A lottery drawing – the first since 1942 – was held on December 1, 1969, at Selective Service National Headquarters in Washington, D.C. This event determined the order of call for induction during calendar year 1970; that is, for registrants born between January 1, 1944, and December 31, 1950. Re-institution of the lottery was a change from the “draft the oldest man first” method, which had been the determining method for deciding order of call. |

I don't think the lottery date means that dudes weren't drafted before that date. |

They were drafting by mid 60s. The birthday lottery was set up later. |

Not totally sure what the specifics are, but the draft never stopped after WWII. I think '73 was the last year. |

Quote: President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 which created the country's first peacetime draft and formally established the Selective Service System as an independent Federal agency.
From 1948 until 1973, during both peacetime and periods of conflict, men were drafted to fill vacancies in the armed forces which could not be filled through voluntary means |

[quote="tommy"]Not totally sure what the specifics are, but the draft never stopped after WWII./quote] Yes it did. They only draft people in times of war. Otherwise they take only those that enlist. That is what made Vietnam so controversial. They concealed the severity of it from the public during the mid 60's (that is how I know that they weren't drafting) it wasn't til the late 60's that they began drafting and that's when a lot of the protests started. |

The military draft brought the war to the American home front. During the Vietnam War era, between 1964 and 1973, the U.S. military drafted 2.2 million American men out of an eligible pool of 27 million. http://michiganintheworld.history.lsa.u ... uring-the- |
