No one is really a libertarian. Libertarianism is an unstable emulsion: eventually you're either in it for the freedom or in it for the stuff. Funny you clock FavreFan that way, though, because "actually, I'm a libertarian" has been the battle cry of Republicans who don't want to be called dumb. But like I said, it's inherently untenable and can indeed break either way.
