Going to be traveling in July w/ my son to visit my sister in Houston and my other sister in kc.

I know all about houston from my last visit there but not much about KC and Western Missouri.

For your weary travelers on this forum, what destinations do you recommend?

I'm for sure going to try out some KC ribs. So some good KC rib joints to recommend would be great. I hear the state is somewhat open so if I can dine in and eat that's cool but take out is fine too.

What about things to do? I got Lake of the Ozarks on the list so I can visit the carnage Wendy and Marty Byrde have done. I hope things are open there to do a 1 day driving trip down there, see the sights, grab some food, and come back at the end of the day.

Harry Truman Presidential library is also on the list but it looks like it's closed due to Covid indefinitely.

Any other sites you'd recommend that are maybe 2 hours max driving distance? I know with COVID a lot of things are going to be limited.

btw not going to travel to STL, too far.

You can apply to be inducted into the Kansas Bowling Hall of Fame here: https://www.bowlkansas.com/Kansas-State ... nformation -- If Barbara Wallace made it in, you should be able to as well.

Love KC. Used to live near there.

Gates BBQ was my favorite. But I have heard in the last few years it has fallen off some.

Arthur Bryant is good. Jack Stack is good.

Go to the Negro League Museum. A lot of cool stuff there to take in since you are a big baseball fan.

Truman Library is another good place.

WW1 Museum and memorial

American Jazz Museum

Arabian Steamboat Museum

Union Station and the Plaza are popular, but I never really cared that much for them.

There is also a good art museum, but I never went as I don't care for art.

Lake of the Ozarks is a decent place, but you know that the series Ozark was not really filmed there? Everything around the Lake of the Ozarks should be open as most of the state is open now.

Good choice in avoiding St Louis. St Louis sucks.

I've rarely if ever have heard a bad word about KC BBQ restaurants. That having been said, the word I got was that Gates' ribs are better than anything here in Chicago. And I raised that critic on BBQ from day one on his first full set of teeth.

That is my experience. Gates BBQ is great and way better than any BBQ in Chicago.

We’re went down the Lake of the Ozarks last weekend and yes it is open. I’d be happy to recommend places to visit while there but I’d need to know what you are looking to do. Keep in mind that much of the draw revolves around lakefront bars and restaurants...and there are a lot of them.

RFDC is wrong about St Louis btw. You just need to know where to go.

To each their own. I have been lots of places in St Louis and just never cared for it. Always enjoyed KC wayyyy more.

Yeah, once the International Bowling Hall of Fame moved out of there, it hasn't been the same.

I used to think STL was terrible - and downtown pretty much still is - but we’ve found a lot of cool neighborhoods to explore along with a much better restaurant scene than I would have imagined. Lots to do for little to no cost: The free zoo and museums, Forest Park, the Budweiser tour, Grant’s Farm, Purina Farms, City Museum (a bit more money but it’s awesome).

Very cool art deco lobby downtown KC.

Another cool downtown attraction. Quick stop that makes for cool pics

Joe's KC for BBQ. Only the original on State Line.
Negro Leagues Museum.
Strouds for fried chicken.
Either Gates or Jack Stack for BBQ meal #2. The latter if you want fancier table service.
Truman Museum if you have time to get to Independence.

I am not a fan of Bryant's even after a half dozen visits with others over the years.

We are thinking just doing a day trip. Like wake up at 7am, drive down, come back at night. Is that enough time? we mainly are going sightseeing and the lakes. and we will get lunch there and possibly early dinner before we leave. for this type of plan, what would you suggest?

So my sister lives a little east of KC. It's small town / suburb. I think it's like a 2 hr drive there. Plan is to get up early, drive down and get there by say 9/10am. Spend the entire day there, eat lunch, see sights, maybe do some fishing, but mainly take in the lakes and the nature. Before leaving maybe eat an early dinner.

What do you recommend for this itinerary? Also does it cost anything to enter the lakes? If there is a boat tour or something that lasts an hour or less that would be great too. But not sure how stuff will operate w/ Covid.

I have had BBQ a lot of places around the country and none of it compares to KC BBQ. So I think you will enjoy it.

I will leave recommendations for Lake of the Ozarks to Zippy as he seems way more familiar with it than I am. Doing a day trip there should be plenty I would think.
