That was a close call.

I typically hit up the Park Ridge Mariano's once a week for their delicious cinnamon doughnuts. I'm not much of a doughnut guy, but these are simply delicious.

Anyway, the store is fairly close to the Blue Line, so it gets its share of homeless folks taking a load off on the benches around the corner. I got into the habit of picking up a few extra doughnuts and leaving them on the bench without making a big deal of it to the person there.

This morning a black guy with a duffel bag and a shopping cart was sitting in front of the store. I sat down on the cement wall and offered him a doughnut. He smiled and said "you know I work here, right?"

I told him I didn't know that and didn't mean to offend him (he wasn't wearing a uniform). A few minutes later another employee - black guy in a uniform - comes out and sits down about 10 feet away from me. I offer him the doughnuts I wasn't going to eat. He says "no thanks" and shortly after the other guy says "well, if you're not going to eat them..."

So we sat there eating doughnuts and chatted about the state of the world for a bit.

That may be true and all about the bakery, but their cinnamon doughnut is delicious. Round cake doughnut with granular cinnamon baked right on. I think I'm going to hit them up tomorrow before the Sunday morning news shows.

No doughnuts for anyone else, though.
