We're in the process of having a fence installed. It appears to be a husband and wife team that is subcontracted by the fence company. Of course there's a lot of manual labor involved. The question is- Do you tip them? I looked it up on line and most say you don't, they're professional contractors like a plumber or electrician. Some add that they might be insulted. A few say yes if they do a good job. Any thoughts?

No tip, though I would normally offer them food and drink (not sure about that these days).

When I had my gutters done and then later my roof, I put a cooler full of water and Gatorade out for them.
The gutter guy was a cash operation and I paid about 10% more than the quote.
The roofers were paid by the insurance company.
They cleaned out a lot of Gatorade.

Yeah I was gonna say that too. A cooler with some bottles of water and Gatorade would be nice.

I wouldn't tip them unless they really did something extraordinary/went out of the way for you. But I will say that I don't know a single person who has ever been insulted by the offer of a gratuity.

Agree on this. A week ago we had guys come out and clean our gutters. Two guys, they did a great job. I wanted to thank them for a job well done.

So I gave them $50 and said "Thanks for the work, let me buy you guys lunch", which is what I always say when I give someone a tip after they have done some work around the house.

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. We've been doing the water thing throughout. Probably should add some Gatorade to the mix.

When I worked at the butcher if I was caught accepting a tip I’d get fired. Had to report the three times I was tipped because the guy wouldn’t take no for an answer. Shit job, shit employer. Shit tip too to be honest.
