We had our first get together meeting in like months. 1 of the guys was like "my mom planted like 100 corn seeds so we are going to see how many ears of corn there are"

I was like only like 100 ears or so. if a stalk has more than 1 its likely 2 dinky ears that are no good. Everyone was like (these are grown people ranging from anywhere from out of college to in the 50's) and I mean EVERYONE was like not it doesnt, there are like 5-6 per ear (harkening back to their grade school school books i imagine)

None of them even came close to believing that Corn is genetically modified to produce as much as it can 1 good ear instead of multiple mediocre ears.

THAT said, i've lived in the QC most of my life and really only found out this was the case like 10 years ago.

So what say you....did you know that most corn grown today is intended to only product 1 ear of corn.

To be honest, I never thought about it, nor did I ever care, but the idea that 1 seed = 1 ear makes perfect sense to me.

Edge rows will often double up on you. Be like an ear and a half worth of kernels in a good year. Depends on variety, population and other conditions. Average year those will be empty ears though.

In garden scale will average out though with plants that failed to germinate.

We planted some heritage popcorn last year. Had like 5 golf ball sized ears per stalk and tasted stale. Hard pass on growing that again.

There once was a farmer who grew award-winning corn. Each year he entered his corn in the state fair where it won a blue ribbon.

One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors.

"How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?" the reporter asked.

"Why sir," said the farmer, "didn't you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn."

He is very much aware of the connectedness of life. His corn cannot improve unless his neighbor's corn also improves.

So it is with our lives. Those who choose to live in peace must help their neighbors to live in peace. Those who choose to live well must help others to live well, for the value of a life is measured by the lives it touches. And those who choose to be happy must help others to find happiness, for the welfare of each is bound up with the welfare of all.

The lesson for each of us is this: if we are to grow good corn, we must help our neighbors grow good corn. If we are to read good message board posts, we must help our board brethren by posting good posts ourselves.

It's been 30-plus years since I worked for a seed corn company, so I no longer consider mine inside information.

I'm not sure I would say the corn has been genetically modified for producing only one ear per plant- but there are many traits a farmer might like that would be the result of only one ear- standability comes to mind right away- too much weight causes the whole plant to topple over before harvest, and much if not all of the kernels are lost to the ground. Stalk shaft strength plays into this, of course.

Certain periods of the corn plant growth affect the grain more than others, early growth produces the plant quality, next stage changes the cob girth and resulting number of rows of kernels, then the next stage affects the length and fill of the cob, etc. I don't recall what sets second or third ears.

I remember we had a #944 hybrid, a 94 day corn that I brought home to the farm for my Grandpa to plant, and we had the best yields he had ever seen- almost all the plants had two ears, many had three, and all made great grain. I think this was 1987, which was a historically good crop year around here. One of a very few times I looked like a genius.

That's a pretty cool story, thanks.
