Non sports, Michael Jackson. Sports, Michael Jordan. For anybody that is even around my age (37), there is absolutely no other correct answer. By the early and mid 90s, he was a worldwide phenomenon. Even in 2005 when I went to Montana and introduce myself to the foreign exchange students, almost every single one of them had the same reaction when I told them I was from Chicago. "Chicago?! Michael Jordan!" Nationally, that may have been a few others in the running from time to time, but nobody topped M J. Joe Montana, Barry Sanders, Bo Jackson for a short time may have been fighting for number 2. But Jordan is the clear number one. |

Jordan At one point in the mid 90s my mom, not a sports fan, says to me "That Michael Jordan is kinda a big deal-huh?" Uh... yeah mom he's the biggest star in the world right now. |

I’ve been trying to think who it was before Jordan as I was 9 when he started his career. Probably too young really although Dr. J was big. Early career of MJ, before his fall from grace, Tyson was bigger must see amongst my little league teams and elementary school. Probably because of infrequency of fights and just how much of a spectacle. Abd Punch Out. |

He was towards the end by my true sports awakening so perhaps I didn’t get to truly appreciate him but you couldn’t be a kid in Chicago and not imitate the high step and stuff. |
