I started to put this in the Douchebag section, but I don't think it really rises to the level of douchebaggery. Then I thought about putting it in Politics because it's likely to devolve into a discussion of identity politics, but I'll start it here.

Are any of you following this story? This nitwit actually pretended to be Spanish for many years and nobody ever called her on it until now. She alternated between various fake accents and pretended she didn't know the English word for cucumber. She was born in Boston and grew up there. On second thought this probably does belong in "Douchebag of the Week". :lol:

I don't really get it. It's not like Elizabeth Warren where she stood to really profit from the ruse. It seems like she's just a real Hispanophile. I can understand someone being enamored with another country or culture. I think that's cool. Mully loves England. But think of how dumb it would be if he pretended to be from Newcastle and started to talk in a Geordie accent.

We hear about the famous ones like Rachel Dolezel and Shaun White, there must be a pretty good number of people doing this. Anyone with skin in that "could be one of like 6 different nationalities" is now suspect and I will begin asking them if they are really what they present as.

Think about how many times this sort of thing has happened now. Did people always do this and they are just getting caught now because of social media? Or is this more a product of modern identity politics?

The line seems to be that everyone knew something was up but nobody wants to piss off the notoriously volatile Alec Baldwin.

What's amazing about this is that she's not even pretending to be Cuban, or Puerto Rican, or any variety of hard-done-by Hispanic American. She's pretending to be from, like, Mallorca, like, actual Spain. What the hell. Who does that.

i should go around speaking in a french accent and pester people with "how you say" constantly.

i have. it seems like she legitimately spent a decent amount of her childhood in spain but she let a lie snowball and finally someone bothered to call her on it.

all that's missing is trump getting a wise-crack in as revenge for the baldwin snl portrayals.

Greenlandic people are visibly Inuit, that one would be really hard to pull off no matter how well you say "Nuuk."

My FIL used to put on an Irish brogue whenever he got drunk and started talking about the old sod, even though his old sod is bridgeport. I think he was disabused of this once his children were old enough to mock him for it in a not so loving way.

Still, there a lot of people that throw that on when they visit Ireland or start talking with someone who is off the boat.

The story is pretty ridiculous because, who cares about Alec Baldwin or his stupid wife. I think its funnier that this old codger is stuck raising 50 kids in his old age even as he was a shitty parent the first time around. On the other hand, it's fantastic for some reason I just can't articulate. Maybe because an old man marrying a young woman and being taken for a fool is a comedic story as old as time.

And now this is no longer a stupid decision. Hilaria Baldwin is insulting all brown people by pretending to be one. I honestly don't know how someone can be offended by this, but all in on saying a 8-year-old needs be able to decide what gender he or she is.

Spain is definitely in the top ten for best-looking women. Just throwing that fact out there.

WZ: A girl down the street is part-Spanish and somehow used that for a "Hispanic" credit with the CPS. She didn't get any breaks in admission, as far as I know, but she is counted at Payton as a Hispanic. I know migration is making old categories a little wobbly, but this Spain/Hispanic thing is really strange.

Hispanic includes Spain, but intuitively shouldn't. Latino, short for Latinoamericano, should include all Romance cultures, like the Quebecois, but it doesn't. White Cubans who bugged off to Miami because they lost their sugar plantations can call themselves either, but no one much likes it when they do. The word we actually want for Spanish-speaking brown people is "mestizo," but it's so tainted by race science and caste systems that we can't use it.
