I started to put this in the Douchebag section, but I don't think it really rises to the level of douchebaggery. Then I thought about putting it in Politics because it's likely to devolve into a discussion of identity politics, but I'll start it here.

Are any of you following this story? This nitwit actually pretended to be Spanish for many years and nobody ever called her on it until now. She alternated between various fake accents and pretended she didn't know the English word for cucumber. She was born in Boston and grew up there. On second thought this probably does belong in "Douchebag of the Week".

She just really liked rolling her r’s and things just got out of hand.

We hear about the famous ones like Rachel Dolezel and Shaun White, there must be a pretty good number of people doing this. Anyone with skin in that "could be one of like 6 different nationalities" is now suspect and I will begin asking them if they are really what they present as.

Think about how many times this sort of thing has happened now. Did people always do this and they are just getting caught now because of social media? Or is this more a product of modern identity politics?

My FIL used to put on an Irish brogue whenever he got drunk and started talking about the old sod, even though his old sod is bridgeport. I think he was disabused of this once his children were old enough to mock him for it in a not so loving way.

Still, there a lot of people that throw that on when they visit Ireland or start talking with someone who is off the boat.

The story is pretty ridiculous because, who cares about Alec Baldwin or his stupid wife. I think its funnier that this old codger is stuck raising 50 kids in his old age even as he was a shitty parent the first time around. On the other hand, it's fantastic for some reason I just can't articulate. Maybe because an old man marrying a young woman and being taken for a fool is a comedic story as old as time.

WZ: A girl down the street is part-Spanish and somehow used that for a "Hispanic" credit with the CPS. She didn't get any breaks in admission, as far as I know, but she is counted at Payton as a Hispanic. I know migration is making old categories a little wobbly, but this Spain/Hispanic thing is really strange.

Hispanic includes Spain, but intuitively shouldn't. Latino, short for Latinoamericano, should include all Romance cultures, like the Quebecois, but it doesn't. White Cubans who bugged off to Miami because they lost their sugar plantations can call themselves either, but no one much likes it when they do. The word we actually want for Spanish-speaking brown people is "mestizo," but it's so tainted by race science and caste systems that we can't use it.
