Ken, I know you’re having a great time drinking that Natural Light out of a community cleaning bucket right now but 2 blocks over in the IT lab there’s a kid working on something called Netscape. It’s not some kind of weird bondage sex toy or anything like that.

Go ask that guy to be your friend.

And fish the cigarette butt out of the beer bucket before you go. Everyone will appreciate that.

1. Fight for the relationship I really wanted and not let the xenophobes ruin it...
2. Don't settle in my current job too long
3. Listen to my heart (which I never did and it cost me dearly)

My first love was an Indian immigrant and Muslim, which didn't play over well with the white, non-practicing Catholic family. Didn't play over well with her Indian Muslim family either. When we reconnected a decade later it was like we had never split, but there were families and things so we couldn't go where we wanted with it.

#3 - In 2006 I had a job offer in Mexico City, at a place I really wanted to be. My heart told me to pull the trigger, but there was a lot of family pressure to stay. In 2010 I was trying to work in the Caribbean (earthquake relief), but gave up even though that's what I wanted to be doing. I have a great job with lots of time off and the chance to travel all over, yet I haven't been happy in ages. I want to be out there doing something that matters. I know I would take a 50% pay cut to do it, but it's not about the pay. I've been walking around feeling empty for the past 15 years.

yeah but sometimes it's about pay too. From what you say here you've got an interesting life. It's hard to know what to do, the grass is always greener, and it really is.

Move.

I stayed in Chicagoland for my family, but I rarely see them anymore. Should have moved to a warmer climate and healthier lifestyle.

Don’t start smoking cigarettes.

At some future point you’ll meet a woman named Tanya. Don’t get involved with her.

Realize that the girls don't have it figured out either. That they are insecure at that age as well. Despite the fact that they can fake it better.

Take a bridge year to grow up a bit more at 18 and/or learn that seeking help is not a weakness.

If it was limited to being 20 it would be to listen to the civil war history prof and visit student services.

Professionally: Take the CPA exam.
Personally: Wouldn't change a thing.

Nothing.

Sure I look back and wish I was a little less hard driving in my youth but my friends wasted a lot of time in those days doing things that have had long lasting effects. I don't regret my decisions on relationships or professions. There are things that were soul crushing but they all were important to growth.

Some alternatives paths might have been better, but this result is pretty great as well. Any unhappiness or dissatisfaction is my own creation and it would have been with me no matter what fork in the road I took

In a very Yoda'esque comment, "always looking to the future you are... Not here in the present... The here and now..."

With that, I would've not been the jackwad I was in high school, actually studied, and made my path in life in the future easier.
