Seems like there are a lot of dudes on here that live in areas not in Chicago.

Just discovered fuckin' Division is in Houston?

Amazes me that people who dont live in Chicago still spend so much time on a Chicago board. You'd think they'd integrate themselves onto boards in their locales.

Anyway, for those of you not living in Chicago, u probly lived here at some point, or grew up here: Do you miss Chicago? Glad ur out? What do u miss and what do u not miss, and what do u like about ur new locale compared to Chicago? And most important, why the fuck do u still post here?

I’m originally from the area. Lived in north and west burbs from 1994-2013. After that, lived in Scotland and now in Houston. Grew up in LaSalle County.

I have been following the boards for years. Never needed to have a password until there was a politics section. Once that section was set up, all the “interesting” discussions got moved there. So I got a login and password and lurked for a while. I’m still more of a lurker than a poster.

Chicago’s a great city. Lots of great cities in the world and Chicago is among them. I miss some of the restaurants and bars. Miss going to sporting events as well (before Covid, of course). I don’t miss the winter weather, though. May, June and September are awesome in Chicago.

I don’t care about Houston sports so no need to integrate into those sports boards.

What do I like about Houston: food is great here, especially if you like Vietnamese or Mexican. Of course BBQ and lots of seafood. Don’t do Italian or pizza very well (it’s not all over like in Chicago metro) but there are some good spots. Beer scene is hot here. I prefer the weather here than Chicago, just don’t care for the tropical storm potential. If we decide to stay in Texas post retirement, would need to move closer to Dallas to get away from the TS threat.

I still live in Illinois.. but not for much longer if I can help it. I love it here, but the taxes, politics, and corruption are pushing me out. Mostly the taxes.

I’ll always love the ‘place’ tho.

moved to Deerfield a year ago after living in Chicago for 25 years. The only thing I miss is the food options. It sucks cause I had lived in my condo for 12 years and finally in the 11th year we started getting some really good food options right in my immediate neighborhood. JT's Genuine Sandwich shop is what I miss the most. Opened 5 months before we moved and I was probably there 4-5x per week. Place is so good.

Then a month after we moved out Little Bucharest was replaced by a new Mexican place called Mis Mole. Fancy mexican specializing in moles, it supposed to be really good. That's 20 feet from my condo's front door.

And to top it off Portillo's opened 100 feet from my condo. At least I assume it has opened, haven't been by there to confirm. Not a huge fan, but the convenience of having it so close would've been really nice.

And then you have the places we that were within a few minute drive of our place that we went to regularly.....Smoque, San Juan Cito Taqueria, Kabobi, Honey Butter Fried Chickem, Red Hot Ranch, Cafe Tola, Tre Kroner, Mother Cluckers and probably a few more I'm forgetting.

I do, well the suburbs because the suburbs are awesome.

Every place has issues. Leaving Illinois is just trading them for other problems. The only thing you can't really solve is snow and cold, though hopefully global warming keeps going to make that less of an issue.

Carsons is good, definitely a fan. Don't get me wrong, there's some decent places up here. But, no where near as good or as varied as in Chicago. I'm a lot closer to Pita Inn up here which is a bonus.

JORR plays James Ward for us. I just text him a food choice, and he sends me places on the North end to go to.

Carson's (different location) was a place my dad would take us to after a game. Im assuming it was mostly baseball game as I can't imagine he wanted to roll in after a late bulls or Hawks game. Always enjoyed it as a kid, maybe I didn't know better but it was always at the end of a good day so who cares.

That would have been the one downtown on Wells, or the one north of Wrigley on Broadway.

Broadway is closed, and the one on Wells is moved further east of Illinois St.

I actually think it was Lombard on Roosevelt road but there might of been another in that general vicinity that I am now unaware of. I think I got some from one near Evanston in summer of 96 with the future wife as it was something her family wanted us to pick them up on the way to visit them in St. Charles one weekend. But it has been a long time since I ate at the one. Probably 88ish.

No, it's a great place. But US has a lot of interesting places to experience/explore.

What do u miss and what do u not miss, and what do u like about ur new locale compared to Chicago?
Miss: An affordable large city with great transit options, interesting neighborhoods and an unique lakefront.
Not miss: No nature; limited outdoor activities
New locale has: Nature; outdoor activities

And most important, why the fuck do u still post here?

Pita Inn in Skokie? Is that still around? I use to go there back in the early 90s. Was just great. What made them special was that yellow rice.

I've posted about Carsons before. It use to be the place for Ribs back in the day. When I visited the city back in 17 went to the one downtown and it wasn't really that good. Place was pretty empty too other than a few patrons. I was at the Deerfield one many years ago and it was really good.

Pita Inn has several locations now. And the one on Dempster moved to a much bigger and nicer location a couple blocks closer to 94. I go to the one in Wheeling when I'm in Deerfield.

Carson's in Deerfield is very good.

If I had made some different choices in the mid-90s and early 00's, I would likely still be in the City limits. I don't regret my decisions, just stating fact.

I suspect I would have a house, an alley garage, and shitty street plowing and parking. Working construction in the City was fun. But, I grew up with a lake in my backyard. The City was fine, the south suburbs were fine, but I'm an open spaces fan. Ponds, lakes, trees, and farm fields are in my wheelhouse. The weird thing about my circuitous route is that I ended up less than a mile from the house I lived in from 0-8 years old.

I'm in the City enough to have it satiate any missings.

I miss going to baseball games. This concludes the things I miss about things within the Chicago city limits.

I take nothing away from the great restaurants that are there or that once existed. I understand why some people love being in the city. I've done it, I get, but in the end I'm just a suburbs guy who wants a yard, a garage, more space, and less people.

I miss trying to get into the Heaven on Seven coffee shop for lunch and waiting in line in the hallway on Wabash in that office building next to the diamond stores.

They have been doing a weekend run into the suburbs to order stuff lately. You have to meet a guy in a Jeep in a gas station parking lot like you are doing a drug deal but it just isn't the same.

Even the Michigan Ave and Naperville locations weren't the same.

The original will always be the best.
