It is the height of irony that the state declared it a holiday but it won't be celebrated until two years later.

Almost as long as it took Lincoln's words to make it to Texas.

That is the irony. I didn't think I had to annunciate it as based on this board it either has always been or will be taught in school

It's another in a long line of symbolic "victories". I'm bothered by it.

symbols are important. I don't know how anyone could be bothered by it. It's a good day. I don't like government employees getting more days off but I love celebrating history. It's good to learn more about our history. I like throwing things on here on Pulaski Day. Even if people bust my stones a little, they do get exposed to something not in the mainstream.

We have been talking about this holiday for a long time at this board. We are always on the forefront of change.

I seem to recall in the foggy past of the board that Regular Reader didn't like Juneteenth.

I'll be in South Carolina tomorrow. I'll be interested to see what things are like there tomorrow.

Symbols are fine. Similar to appetizers. Eventually, you need more.

MANY of these other holidays are celebrated while kids are in school. That means even for 1 day these people will be discussed and kids can be exposed to the information. This "holiday" takes place during summer break. That significantly reduces the exposure for many.

CPS gets out today and there is an entire month for concentration on black history, during which Juneteenth is undoubtedly noted.

There is more (on federal, state and municipal levels) and you aren't looking if you don't see it. Hate on Lightfoot or the programs all you want but she has prioritized equality across all departments in this city. I think the government has been incredibly facile and imaginative in getting COVID shots available to the black community and I think this new stream will be the infrastructure to battle healthcare disparities. The affordable housing crises has been addressed in myraid ways. Minimum wage increased. Infrastructure has been created for greater investment in south and west neighborhoods.

There are certainly responses and critiques to all of these but to say the symbol isn't backed by action is not accurate.

I think you're missing my point, I'm not really interested in these holidays. They mean very little to me. I don't need a capitalistic commemoration of whitewashed black history in America to feel like I'm an American.

You know a lot of stuff isn't taught in school because MANY have been afraid to stray far away from the safety of history books and some history has been "lost". There are even things in history books that don't get the focus they deserve.

The historical expert is here to tell us how it really was. It's so much worse than what's taught!

Just don't show up tomorrow at the bar in a dashiki or fly a red, black and green flag on your car. We'll be cool as long as that doesn't happen. Otherwise I'll have to turn my back on you.

Damnit. Hope they can squeeze me in at Maaco to undo this unfortunate paint job on the farm truck.

Somebody at the office here shared a Linkd In post that was written by some Black professor about how to celebrate Juneteenth. It was a legit serious article. The suggestions were;

-Listen to a sermon/attend church
-Patronize a black owned business
-Play baseball
-Have a barbeque
-Eat watermelon or other local summer grown fruit (red to symbolize their bloodsed)

Other than church, I basically celebrate Juneteenth every weekend!

I have a lot of jokes I wanted to post in here about this topic but we can't offend Italians or Polish people any more.

It wasn't so much a dislike of the day, rather an irritation by many talking about it ad nauseum as if it should have some newfound importance. I'd never heard of it until I actually was in Galveston in June '86 with a then gf. It didn't seem like anyone viewed it as a big deal back then. Frankly, I don't care one way or the other.

*I just remember why I came off as bothered by it here. JORR's former BBQ guy in Evanston made a big deal about it annually and I remember thinking how irritated I'd have been by his description. And I'm saying that sitting here in an HBCU t-shirt and Black history month shorts.

I made a post on FB listing 19 movies either forgotten or more obscure all made by and/or starring black icons. But it is not a challenge…it’s an offer to go out and find them and enjoy them.

Young Crest was invited to something called Polish Family Camp this week by his lady friend. He was unable to go because of work.

Is this what he is missing? If so, I'll show him.
