Their kind is out as pro coaches. When I was a kid, I thought every NFL city had a "Ditka type". Cuz that's all I knew. Wasn't true even back then. Even in the 1980s most coaches were decent guys at least to the media. Bill Parcells was kind of an ass hole with the Giants. But not like Ditka. Joe Gibbs, Don Shula and Bill Walsh were all civilized decent guys. Successful coaches in the 1980s. Christ, when I was 12 years old I had a "Ditka type" coach for my basketball team. He told our team to huddle up at one practice, and then dropped kicked a basketball at us because we were misbehaving it practice. It missed. Barely. We all ducked it. But it was a screamer and would have done damage if it hit one of us in the face. He would be arrested for that today. Back then, we all went home and didn't even think to tell our parents. I know I didn't. I just thought that's what coaching was. |
