I know it's related to the chickenpox virus, but how do you randomly get it in your 60's? My mom texted me yesterday and said it was painful and could last up to a year. Anyone get them?

My guess that it is like any virus....you can get it anywhere anytime.
Imagine a rash that doesn't itch so much as it causes terrible pain. I got shingles about 20 years ago and they hit me
in an area that is very important to a man. It was miserable, and I hope your mother gets well soon. It sucks.

The old guy who lived at the corner of our farm for many years got it late in his life, his neck/shoulder area was so sensitive, he could not bear to wear a shirt. Even the breeze from a fan blowing across the area hurt. His went on for a long time, seems like years, and treatment was slow, if not ineffective.

I wonder how we have a vaccine for shingles, which I do plan to get. If it stems from chicken pox, which I already had, how does a vaccine work against something you already were exposed to?

Short answer is that for most who’ve had chickenpox, the virus remains in your nervous system forever. Some trigger comes along that reactivates it, and that could be anything.

Ironically, I had a very mild case around March 2020. I’m in my mid-30s and otherwise healthy; I always thought shingles was an old person’s disease, so was a bit confused. After doing some research, I convinced myself I either had cancer or a bunch of internalized stress. Then a friend also got it; similar age, similar circumstances.

My completely unscientific opinion became that it was somehow related to an otherwise asymptotic COVID infection.

Oddly I got it at roughly the same age. Fortunately it was mild for me as well. I was set to start a trial two days later and I called opposing counsel and the idea of catching it had him stopping by the judge's chambers the next day to get a continuance.

I had it, fairly mild, but on my face, back in my 30s. All good since. I think I even had a bout of gout back then too.

I’m in my 50s, and wasn’t going to bother getting vaxed until two of my friends’ wives got it. Painful, lasting over a month.

It’s a two-shot vaccination you can get at any Walgreens w/o appointment. Most insurance now covers it. I had a painful and sore reaction in my shoulder for about 5 days after the second shot.

I had it about 5 years ago. Was given the wrong medication initially and I ended up in the ER and then intensive care for a night. ER Doc said it was the worst case he had seen. Pain was unbelievable.

Hope your Mom is ok.

I also am told it can be brutal. I plan on getting vaxxed at my annual in early October.

Here's my understanding. Chickenpox and shingles are both caused by the same virus, varicella-zoster. When you first contract the virus it manifests as chickenpox. Now you have the virus in you and it can later manifest as shingles.

I had it probably 10 years ago or so. On my right side by my ear/jawline. Mild case but painful enough that I couldn't sleep at night and it bothered the crap out of me during the day. I got it when I was out of town for work and it was a pretty stressful time so I am sure that the stress was the main cause. Got steroids to take care of it and was essentially gone after 24 hours.

A friend got it on his back and it ended up causing nerve damage. Took about 6 months to for him to get back to normal. Much worse case than mine.
