Hard to believe I've been listening for 30 years. How many of you have also been there since Day One?

ON Day 1? yes.

SINCE day 1? fuck no. I bailed long before relocating nearly 4 years ago. There is nothing remotely worth listening to on that station that is not a live sporting event in recent years.

I've been listening since day 1. Granted school and work did not allow me to listen that much in the 90s compared to the last 10-15 years with the advent of podcasts. Love the way the station has moved away from the grab-ass, caller-driven shows of the 90s to what we see today. Here's looking forward to the next 30 years of the station.

I'll be surprised if it lasts another three.

Maybe from February of 92, but I can't say that I've listened much since Boers left.

I was a near-daily listener from November '06 through about March '13. Sporadic until Terry left for good, then barely listened from 2017 on. I don't think it will be long before most of the broadcast day is simply BetQL.

was excited about it - no real daily sport talk during the 80s. i felt it met my expectations and more the first 10-15 years. remember it signing off at sunset with sinatra...was disappointed it had to shut down operations until the next day.

I starting listening around 1996. I cannot recall turning it on before then. It was probably on 820 (1160) or whatever station went low signal when the sun went down.

Can't listen live to the hosts anymore. Turned into CNN. Guests, games, Bears postgame, Les screw-up gems are all that's left.

I heard virtually every minute of every weekday show for the 1st 3 years or so. After that I got a new job which required travel so my listening became a bit more sporadic but I still have them on in the background whenever I can.

Pretty sure SID (Score is doomed) was posting that same thought 20 years ago.

ya it was great back then. I tried to listen as much as I could back in the early days.

it was so fresh and caller driven even though it was only on the air like for 8 hours a day.

maybe being on during only the daytime helped in some way where they didnt over commit with things.

good memories.

AM radio is not in the same place it was 20 years ago. Not even 10 years ago. Look at Canada, where there are hardly any AMs left.

What I can see happening when Mully hangs 'em up is some declaration that "middays are the new mornings" and a commitment to satellite programming, probably gambling-based, in morning drive. That would bring the Score in line with Marquee and NBCSC in terms of running gambling garbage in the morning in the absence of anything better. I wouldn't be surprised if they just end up limiting live/local to weekdays 9-6 in the near future, probably on an FM while Audacy runs 670 out of a broom closet.

Didn’t know it was that bad for AM radio.

But isn’t right wing political radio keeping it afloat?

I think brokered programming is doing more to keep conservative talk stations afloat these days than the conservative talk itself. 890 can't even hit a 1.0 in the ratings anymore. Why even pay the electric bill for a 50,000-watt transmitter at that point? "Bruce St. James" would reach more ears with a megaphone on a busy corner.

Hasn't Etercom err I mean Audacy already started to transition their sports radio in other markets to gambling?

Podcasts killed AM Radio and now with cars having smart features that give you access to podcasts, AM radio no longer has a purpose except for something like WBBM.

I started on day one. Will never forget it because I was so happy to have an All sportstalk radio station in this city. Remember when Chet blurted out that it wouldn't last and everything. I used to get jacked up by the 30 minute increase in airtime that would occur month to month back in the day.
Hard to think that I find it to be unlistenable now. Can't listen for more than 5 minutes now. Part of it is the nature of the station. Most of it is probably just me.

yup - it was very exciting and great to listen to. back then there was no internet and radio/tv was it for everything. glory days.

ya i haven't listened in years except if someone posts a podcast here. the fan driven sports talk has died I guess for several years now.

Yes and yes. WEEI-AM is all-gambling now, as I mentioned a while ago, and had been losing market share for years to WBZ and Barstool because everyone thought WEEI was just for cranky old New Englanders (as opposed to the sunny cosmopolitans of Barstool, I suppose). They moved the local programming to FM, but I think some of the broadcast day is satellite now.

I still believe in FM radio, but AM? Other than listening to Cardinals and Reds games at night for free, what's the point? It sounds like shit. That kind of matters in an auditory medium. It had a great run, but there's no place for low-fidelity broadcasting anymore, not when kids playing video games on Twitch are calling each other the n-word in crystal-clear lossless audio. At this point, you're better off selling the land the masts are on than trying to keep them running. That makes things interesting as far as Audacy goes, because either Entercom or CBS on its way out the door did exactly that for 780 and started piggybacking off 670's setup.

i listen to coast to coast am on AM radio - I was reading at it's peak w/ Art Bell, late 90s, it use to average 15 million listeners a night! If you got on to sell your book back then you would become an instant millionaire over night.

Now the Coast to Coast AM listenership is no where close to the hey dey. I think now it's like 2 million listeners. And since Trump got elected into office, the show has become a right wing show mainly shitting on covid vaccines. The show was/is suppose to be about the paranormal but now it's about right wing politics and selling fake medicine/supplements 5 out of the 7 days of the week.

But I guess that is what they have to do to survive. Go right wing and it seems it's the only thing that is bringing in advertisers. Coast to Coast AM's biggest advertiser/sponsor now : Newsmax. Art Bell is rolling in his grave.

Another 3?! Lol. I wish one of the gambling companies we’re allegedly selling out to would let me take that bet. Local sports radio will be the last of the genre to die. The score is still profitable and does 8 figures of revenue. It’s a changing business model but let me just follow the logic here “Legalized sports gambling is spending an insane amount of money in targeted advertising, a 50,000 watt local sports radio station that has the Cubs and Bulls, is going to go out of business in THREE years.” Ok.

WEEI am signal went all gambling because they have a FM signal for their regular programming. There’s no question the Score would benefit from being on FM. It would be great. But there’s no FM sports station in the market so since there’s still ample business to be done in the sports radio genre, the AM stick that still had us regularly ranked in the top 5 in the Men 25-54 demo this year btw, will continue to do plenty of business. Audacy can’t put us on FM because their are FCC rules about how many signals one company can own and they’re maxed out in this market. Many Audacy stations in other markets though are on FM so maybe it will happen in the future…

The days of a host on the score making 1 million plus are clearly gone but we still make great money, especially relative to the fact that we talk sports a few hours a day. It’s amazing.

I don’t know if I’ll still be here for the 33rd anniversary of the score but I guarantee we’ll have one.

Happy New Year.

Not so sure.

They are still paying the Cubs 8 figures for their broadcast rights.

Did they specify the decimal point in the contract?

Yeah, The Score isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Bernstein may be gone in 3 more years.
