We are sending a vending machine rocket at an asteroid to see what happens.

It won't destroy it but NASA hopes it will deflect it just enough to learn something.

Nothing bad could happen from that.

I'll bet you a dollar that it pushes the asteroid onto a collision course with earth.

If the rocket can't destroy the asteroid perhaps it could train people on using their pronouns correctly?

I actually think it is a great test.

I just wanted to make a joke.

But it might also cause all of our deaths.

The price you pay to try to protect humans/Terrans.

i find it odd they need to test something like this. it seems like the math is straighforward... unless they are assuming they might be way off on the mass of the asteroid. more likely just a handshake funding deal to line someones pockets.

This is something we really need to test. We're long overdue for a planet damaging or ecosystem destroying asteroid or comet. If we intend to stay on this planet as a species, deflecting asteroids or comets 8s something we need to know how to do.

We already know. Its simple math. Any asteroid that is going to end civilization wont be stopped by rockets or bombs. The only chance we would have is to hit them from far out in the solar system, but we wont detect in time to get something out far enough to alter trajectory enough to matter.

This is for smaller ones that might cause some damage, but not big enough to really worry about anyway

The point is if it can be detected it time only a small push might be necessary to nudge it out of the way. Some of these we see years in advance. If we can give it a small push there would be plenty of time to get it out of the way.

if its in an orbit that might circle back and hit us one day, sure... but we already know about all those.

the problem is the ones coming at us directly. we wont see those in time to get a rocket out far enough. takes months to even reach mars. by the time an astroid enters the solar system, its doomsday.

Pretty amazing that we can potentially hit a moving target 7 million miles away with a vending machine sized projectile.

That being said, I heard that this mission was being headed up by NASA. All I heard when Trump was in office was Space Force so I am just figuring that NASA doesn't roll up under them and hoping someone can explain the difference to me now that Space X and Blue Origin are shooting most of the rockets off these days. According to the interwebs this is Space Force's current function -- It is responsible for operating and defending military satellites and ground stations that provide communications, navigation and Earth observation, such as the detection of missile launches

I assumed Space Force's main mission is to fight the aliens.

So it's built just to deflect? Is the rocket named "ltg"?

More like military satellite and debris patrol and potentially fighting against any outer space attacks from another country.

Would this be considered like one of those "false flag" things? I'm not as well-versed on conspiracies.

Is this asteroid actually going to kill us and we hastily sent something up to alter the course and just told everyone it is a test?

If an asteroid was 98% sure to hit us, would we be told? Probably hard to keep that quiet. Matt Nagy got fired on The Patch.

Thats most certainly what this is really about. Saying theyre trying to deflect astroids to protect earth is bullshit.

What if we are not trying to nudge it enough to miss earth, but rather to hit a certain part of earth on purpose...

Most asteroids or comets that are discovered aren't found by NASA, they're found by amateur or semi professional
astronomers or a handful of comet hunters like shoemaker or levy. I don't think that there's a way to keep it quiet. That's one hell of a group of people hunting these inner solar system visitors. I think we would know.

One of my favorite scenes from Apollo 13 was when Hanks had to figure out a course correction and he asked the NASA guys to check his math, which led to a shot of six guys with pencil, paper and slide rules urgently checking his work.
