The word was that Hef was closeted. He did have sex with the women but it would only be doggy while gay porn was on and he was faced towards the TV.

He always seemed creepy to me, like a guy still living in the 50s-60s in the 90s-00s, but entirely unaware of his lack of hipness.

I am not sure about closeted. Probably dabbled in the Bi craze in the early 70's like Bowie/Jagger/Lennon? No idea. Anyway, I thought part of his problems were his mother or parents were super religious strict and daddy left him.
