Little Claw's car was stolen, cops and insurance people all said that model Kia is frequently stolen, it was recovered and in the shop now for repairs.

Question for any insurance types out there, will they drop her coverage or jack up the rate due to the claim even though she was not at fault?

Wondering if I should start shopping now for car insurance, already had her on a separate policy due to previous claim that was her fault.

They will find it somewhere minus the cat converters.

Yup, detective showed me a picture of the guy they got when he tried to use her debit card at a liquor store, she cancelled it immediately, but the company sent alerts when they tried to use it which we gave to the cops who were likely in the same database and were tracking the theft.

Car thefts are rampant her according to the cops.

She was helping a single mom friend of her by picking up here kids from day care and the dudes that stole the car were apparently watching her and took the car as soon as she took the kids back into the house. They had removed the car seats when we recovered the car which freaked out the kids mom because she didn't have the money to replace them, so we bought her new ones.

It takes a special type of sub human to spend your days driving around looking for single moms struggling with kids and then steal their car.

Hope this didn't happen in Cook County. If so, nothing will be done.

Ah yes, low cost insurance advertised during daytime television is the best all round bet.

Maybe the car was wearing suggestive clothing. Like one of those bras that people put on their cars for some reason in the 80s

It’s easier than looking for an actual work. I hear jobs are hard to come by these days. That being said, cheap way to track the car is to buy an AirTag and hide it in the trunk somewhere. Not that the police are going to be very proactive in tracking it for you but at least you’ll know where it’s at and maybe they can come get it eventually. Can’t be wasting the cops time on these nonviolent crimes you know

No, she picked up the younger kid, put her wallet in the glove compartment and locked the car. Cops said they are able to use an Iphone charger to quickly start the car once they have popped the door lock and removed the wiring from the steering column. The goofs left a bunch of robbery tools in the car, mostly bend screwdrivers, the cops said they must have ditched quickly once they noticed them following, detective said they lost them for a minute, but would not reveal how they found the car.

Yeah, detectives recommended we get a LoJack tracking system.

thankfully, the car didn't cause any damage to anything else/involved in a one car accident - especially with city property.

some 25 years ago, we had a car stolen. car found next night in an alley on the west side. car was smashed into a city utility pole. city sent me bills for 2 years, due to the damaged utility pole. cops called me to alert me and told me that i had 6 hours to tow car, or city would tow to pound. called a friend who owns a tow company. he got there at 330 am, little kids playing in the car, jumping on the hood and roof...he had to call the cops to disperse them to tow the car. on a school night, middle of week, in the rain in an alley at 330 am...playing in and on the car.

luckily for her, no gun involved. today, no need to mess with the steering column. just flash a gun and the car is your's.

Question for any insurance types out there, will they drop her coverage or jack up the rate due to the claim even though she was not at fault?

Wondering if I should start shopping now for car insurance, already had her on a separate policy due to previous claim that was her fault.

Claw--your daughters claim is covered under comprehensive coverage. Insurance companies do not apply a surcharge based on a comprehensive claim. However, it is possible the insurance company could remove a "claims free" discount if your daughter was receiving one. Insurance company discounts vary so it's best to check the policy declarations page to see what discounts were being given. If that discount wasn't present, then there will not be an increase based on the theft loss.

Just so you know, insurance companies share customer loss history with other carriers. The timing of reporting varies but claims are usually reported to a third party (Lexis Nexis and Verisk) within 30 days of issuing a payment on a claim. I'm not aware of any insurance company that underwrites against a theft loss/underwriting claim but each company can have unique criteria.

Insurance rate filings are public. You can look up your carrier’s rate filing and see.

Medical POA for a close family member that is stubbornly clinging to her independence despite increasingly requiring hospitalization for her issues, so it will be a bit before I can escape Illinois.

Is the crime in chicago that bad?

I remember in the 70s it was the absolute worst. You can get killed walking in downtown.

From what i've read, it's bad but not clearly as bad as in the 70s. I hear the crime is mostly in 2-3 neighborhoods where no tourists or business people would venture. Is that true? Or is it everywhere like in the 70s?

At least in the 70s you can pack in your briefcase or purse.

Got the car back from insurance approved repair place yesterday. Noticed they had written, "does not work, needs new engine", on the car, when I asked why they said it helps prevent them from being stolen off the repair lot. It apparently gives you some type of status or credit in gangs to steal a car.

Seems we have completely ceded control of the city to the gang bangers at this point. Modern times are worse than the old Wild West where at least the horse thieves faced serious consequences.

  • In the 70's one could get killed walking from downtown to Chicago Stadium.
  • Pre-pandemic we made that walk MANY times. Never a problem.
  • Haven't been to an event at the UC since the pandemic but if we ever do it is highly doubtful we would walk :(

I've been told property values are up so this is proof that this is not a problem.

Would say it's past time for the smartest people in the country to come together and discuss how to fix things, but instead we have a collection of grifters we call politicians trying to figure it out, so that ain't gonna happen.

Was also struck by the vast gulf in quality between the insurance approved dealership repair place and the place we bought the car at in Wisconsin and even more notably, the dealership I use, same town, only a few miles apart, but a huge gap in the level of people and professionalism.
