I'm going to admit it it upfront, I am really a dunce and probably shouldn't be responsible for a house (let alone kids, but i l got through that)

So, after a big storm these "carpetbaggers" (as my dad would call them), walk through the area and offer a magical new roof for simply the cost of your deductible. But it always seemed a little sketchy to me, and a bit of "if it sounds too good to be true..."

Am I an idiot?

Let me rephrase that, have any of you capitalized on such a ...scam.

Interesting that the most recent iteration of such a company that spoke with my wife said that they have success with all companies, save one-State Farm, our company

Every year the same company will come through after every big storm and try to talk people into getting a new roof and siding. My older neighbor got his roof and siding replaced last year and was ecstatic that the insurance was covering it. I wanted to ask him if they came through after the latest storm or did they already have him crossed off the list, but I didn't want to be a dick.

So they offer to climb up on your roof and provide evidence that your roof was damaged in whatever storm just came through...despite the fact that my roof has got to be 20+ years old and of course is damaged....

and the insurance company says " yeah, must've been that storm last Thursday, here's 30 grand?

It reminds me of the old Henny Youngman joke

"I had a hooker walk up to me last night and said for $50 I'll do whatever you want.
I said great . Paint my house."

Believe it or not, worked on my house. Got a new roof for the amount of my deductible.

Yeah me too. My roof was 15 years old and apparently had hail damage. Leash’s company paid the claim no questions asked.

Get two types every spring, goofs trying to sell you on lawn care and the odd and unfortunate people from Europe they send around on bicycles trying to sell magazine subscriptions.

Felt so bad for the kid they sent last Summer from Lithuania that I gave him a beer and let him sit in the AC for a few minutes, told him if he wanted a Summer job experience in the US he should ride his bike up to the Dells where they hire tons of Eastern Europeans to clean hotel rooms each Summer.

I have gotten two roofs on two different properties after a hail storm. Just need to vet the people doing the work.

I've had my roof done too although the guy was so shady I used the insurance payout to pay a reputable roofer. These guys do part of the roof and then badger your insurance for the rest. They're relentless. No idea why these insurance companies keep paying out.

It's how the system has worked for years. Insurance seems to operate on inertia.

Was walking around the house and yard doing the once over as the weather finally improved. Thought to myself that we sure could use a big storm so I can get all my shingles replaced.

Maybe next lightning storm climb up on the roof during the storm with a metal pole and poke some holes in the roof and throw some shingles around, and then you'll be able to file a claim.

We used to have Irish Travelers show up about every other Summer or so and they'd get drunk with our dad and make a deal to spray paint all of the outbuildings on the various properties. I think these were the same sort highlighted in "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding" except I never saw any women with them. They must leave the women at home when they travel around in the summer or maybe the traveler women were sleeping off their hangovers in the campers they traveled around in.
