Emissions testing has been pretty painless the last few times, so DMV.

As long as you don't go the last day of the month, emissions have never been a problem for me at Bedford Park or Markham. Never been there over 10 minutes and I take my mom's car in as well as mine. The DMV isn't great, but they also are constrained by the people in line being idiots too. Emissions you basically just get out of your car and you're good. DMV you need specific documents for specific things that a lot of dopes are completely surprised by and it fucks over everybody else in line while they fumble around or argue. I got lucky renewing and getting a Real ID done just when the DMVs reopened after Covid and started appointments. In and out in 45 minutes, which isn't great, but not bad either.

No emissions testing here, thankfully.

DMV can be a huge pain in the ass most days.

True. I laugh at the people who show up with none of the required documents or IDs. One guy in front of me said his boss gave him his truck as a bonus and he needed to change the title....yet had no proof of sale (or "bonus"), no title, nothing. The clerk asked him for an ID, he had none. She finally asked if he had any proof he worked for the company, such as a business card. He had nothing.

DMV here no doubt, emissions can be done at most service stations so that is nothing now.

That's if you can make it out of there without being bowled over by an R&L Carriers truck.

If it keeps me from going to the Waukegan DMV (9th circle of hell), yes. I'll also pay the service charge for mail in shit if it means I don't have to go deal with those miserable pricks.

It's been this way ever since the state closed the Libertyville facility and moved it out the fuck to Lake Zurich.

You can get plate stickers at a currency exchange for a fee, but its less than $15.

You can also renew online via electronic check for $0 in fees.

Not sure how it works there but for emissions , watch out - if you have your check engine light on it fails automatically.

There are scumbags working there too who will not tell you that when you bring your car in.

Honestly, it's been a couple of years, but I think it was $5, not $15. And the less time I waste dealing with state bullshit, the better.

This.

The people who seem to do the loudest complaining also seem to be the same ones who can't be bothered to take a few minutes to go online to figure out what they are required to have.

renewal online takes like 2 minutes
and i think the fee (for credit card) might be like 2 or something . Vs. 15
The only reason i could see going somewhere to get it instantly is if you cannot wait the 2 weeks or so for it be mailed to you if it is danger of expiring. Or already expired.

I understand. It's "killing two birds with one stone".

Yeah the DMV is a disaster mostly because of the patrons. it always seems if you have your shit together, the people behind the counter are very nice and glad you are there.

Ours now has kind of a goalie. she will not let you in a line unless you have everything you need.

I brought in a previously salvaged vehicle that had a lien on it and the previous title was out of state. There wasn't room on the online form for all the information and she had to whip out the carbon copy form and mail it to the state. it took a while but everyone I worked with was very nice. We laughed at the whole ridiculousness of what we were doing. she said she hadn't filled one of these out in 5 years.

Also the amount of old people failing written tests is just unbelievable to me.

That's some brass balls to even attempt such an impossible thing. You must be Evel Knievel.

I am one of those old people. I was up for doing 2 writtens -- car and motorcycle -- as well as a vision test (which I was most worried about). But maybe because I brought all my stuff, had the right cash ready and was nice to people, they gave me a pass on all of it. This was at the aforementioned Lake Zurich location.

DMV out here isn’t bad as long as you miss the truckers. It was a bit of a pain during Covid but they opted out of doing vision tests so thst seems like a potential problem with the aged population out here. Need to go back for my real ID though. Joy.

Haven’t had to do emissions in almost 30 years thankfully. Was a bit of pain getting the old Chevy celebrity to pass back then. Had a problem with thst engine light and the mechanic never could find it. I think he offered to take the car in for the retest if it failed. I’m sure that would of been cheap.
