Was watching something on YouTube where they had guys like Iverson, Shaq, and Magic talking about how many points Jordan would average in the modern NBA, kept wondering what kind of stats Wilt Chamberlain would put up if he was in his prime playing today.

It seems Wilt was kind of like a Bo Jackson type freakish athlete, can only imagine what that would look like with modern training/nutrition. He was also an absolute monster on the defensive end, highly doubt any of the modern guys, especially modern big men could score on him, he could easily average over 20 rebounds and it would seem 40-50 points a game.

There is also a distinct possibility that he would care very little about the games because he would have many more opportunities to party, and if half the stories are true, he sure seemed to enjoy life back in the day.

He's probably less dominant. Half the league had to have second jobs so they could sustain themselves while Wilt made more than enough to just concentrate on basketball.

I lean toward he would put up a lot of points and be a defensive monster. With so many opponents out around the 3 point line lobbing it in and out to him seems a great strategy.

Was the consensus that he would put up more or less?

They all said Jordan would average at least 40 in the modern NBA because all of the methods teams used to employ to try to slow him down are no longer used due to rule changes and the lack of physical play.

The safe assumption is that if scoring is up 10% vs Jordan's era, then MJ would score approx 10% more...so yeah, if Jordan averaged 35-37 ppg in some years, 40 ppg is pretty realistic.

Probably Dwight Howard would be a good comp physically.

Isn't it amazing how much players evolved from the time Wilt played to reach the ultimate peak of development 40 years ago when Jordan played only to cease evolving to the present day?

Said this before in some other thread but if wilt was born today he wouldn't be a classical center. That's because instead of learning how to operate in the post while growing up he'd be trying to cross over people and shoot fadeaway threes from half court like everyone does today. The culture surrounding the game is so much different.

Definitely. There really aren't centers in the way that there were 50 years ago. Certainly not offensively.

Do you think if Durant (6'10) was born in 1960 he'd be raised as a center or PF? He may have only attempted five three pointers during his entire career.

Wilt would first team defense all-NBA every year and get 20 rebounds, no problem. It's the offensive end that's in question. Maybe he's great there too. But it seems the only A shot he had was the fadeaway bank. With that and dunking, is it enough to be great offensively? The dipsy doo would be smacked into the 5th row.

Wilt was a freak of nature. He was dominant while playing 48 minutes a game and taking a beating. The conditioning and stamina that he had was off the charts.

Ticky tack fouls were rampant in the 60's. No one took a beating until the late '70's. They had to do it that way. No one could make a shot except Jerry West.

Stuff out there that Wilt benched 600 pounds, that seems a bit much, but there is supposedly a verified report that he benched 465...when he was 59 years old! Rumors about him doing curls with 125 pounds and tricep extensions with 170 pounds, if half of it is true he was a beast and would easily overpower everyone other than maybe Giannis and Embid.

A different kind of load management. He was a man ahead of his era.

I don't know about that, but I will say Shaq is the most underrated NBA player of them all.

Who's he underrated by? Everyone knows he was an unstoppable force. That's why they played hackashaq to get him to throw FTs which, he kinda sucks at.

The real question is, where would Steph curry be if he played in the 90s?

There was an old dude in our town who went to college for track and field and competed against Wilt. He had a picture with him from a meet at Kansas. He said everyone was convinced that Wilt was an alien from another planet or something because no one could come close to him in anything.

I count 2 guys from the 60's who could have decent careers in 2020 NBA. Some of these "plumbers and firemen" had problems dribbling. If people were truly honest, it's high school varsity level play.

Makes me wonder if the NFL had that kind of disparity. Is YA Tittle garbage? Would a today's allstar Texas high school team beat the NY Football Giants?
