Were you all compassionate and shit ?

Just one of my hookers. That’s it. Don’t want to discuss the details. But I had to let her go.

I have not. Many tough conversations but usually folks pick it up or quit.

Thank them, tell them you need to go in a different direction, thank them again, wish them well. Make sure things are documented as well as to why they're being terminated.

Never had to fire with HR and IT and everything. Most of my staff were scattered across a half dozen offices across the country and well educated. I usually talked with them on individual weekly calls, and flew in to their office for 2-3 days every quarter to see them as well as other senior staff. So if I flew in for a single day to meet with them and then left without any other meetings, and our conversation wasn't particularly upbeat, maybe it was time to start looking.

I did have to put some folks on improvement plans, but a couple of them got their act together and the rest just left on their own. We were in a labor hour revenue business, so if you weren't being used by your colleagues it became apparent quickly.

Had to fire 2 times. I hated doing ,one was at Hollywood video other was when I was a supervisor at a PBM company. That one was the hardest as it was out of the blue.

Bob’s wife fired me from painting her back walls. I think she felt guilty or something. Does that count?

Once. I hated it even though it was deserved. My much older partner treated it like a capo sending his foot soldier on his first hit. He said it was something I needed to learn to do. She cursed me up and down. She had only worked a couple of months but must have been absent at least a dozen times. I also smelled alcohol on her. I still dreaded it.

I now try to go through temp agencies so that I test a new hire out before making a decision on hiring. It's worked well.

Above the secretarial level, I've been fortunate enough to have the bad workers quit before I had to fire them.

This isn't a charity, it's a business. We're here to MAKE MONEY.

It's time to get rid of the dead weight.
