Why did we have to memorize these in grade school? What purpose could it possibly serve other than to familiarize children with drudgery? |

I probably still have at least 47 or 48 memorized. Like MJ, I like to know where things are. |

Someone in my wife's social circle is homeschooling their children and have made a goal to visit to every state capitol. Why? She's a dumbass Trumper so we're not too surprised. |

Remember well having to pull out a black piece of college ruled paper and a pencil at the begging of 6th grade English class and write down 20 prepositions, once you got it you were done, but the kids that didn't had to keep doing it every day until they passed. It ended up being fairly lucrative for me because my buddy Kevin would ask me to write down a few so he could pass, he would give me a dollar each time, it took him five times to pass, so it was a nice chunk of change for me back then. We also did state capitols, Preamble to Constitution, and of course the good old timed match stuff, they were big on memorization back in the day, but I really hated having to write sentences when the class got in trouble, having to write, "I will not talk while the teacher is talking", 100 times on a sheet of paper was not fun, wonder if they still do that today? |

We had to do the amendments in 8th grade. The teacher who retired right before I got there would give everyone pins that said "I Passed the Amendments" but I never got to get one. |

Detroit was the capital the State of Michigan for the first decade of statehood, holding over from territorial days. And then they moved it to the middle of the state out of concern about Ohio or maybe Canada invading and literally taking the capitol, like some sort of real life game of Risk. Chillicothe served as Ohio's state capital until they realized it's built on top of some massive sacred Indian burial grounds and the placed is fucked (even more so than the rest of god-forsaken Ohio), so they moved it to some other shitty town temporarily before settling on bum-ass Columbus. Indiana originally had its capital down along the Kentucky border, but similar to Michigan's rationale soon moved it to the center of the state. Like anyone other than brain-dead idiots would ever want to take over Indiana. Illinois' capital and capitol used to be across the Mississippi, in Kaskaskia. Next up was Vandalia, which got a 2 decade deal to serve as the state capital but wasn't able to get it renewed, Vandalia was too ramshackle, according to the yelp reviews of the day. When the time came to move on from Vandalia, the argument was primarily between Jacksonville and Springfield. The latter near Lincoln's log cabin, the former home to that Stephen Douglas. Alton actually won a state-wide voter referendum on where to build the next state capitol. But no one in the Illinois legislature cared much what Illinois voters wanted. Eventually Stephen Arnold Douglas and Jacksonville took the L vs Abraham born-too-poor-to-have-a-middle-name Lincoln. Belmont for Wisconsin, but possibly only when it was a territory. Might've carried over long enough for the state legislature to officially vote to gtfo of Belmont. |

Ramshackle. It sounds just like it's definition. Like Larry Bird actually looks like a bird. |
